Duties Description Under the direction of the Fire Protection Specialist 2, the incumbents support the activities of the Office of Fire Prevention and Control (OFPC) Risk Reduction Unit.
Duties include, but not limited to the following :
- Develops course curriculum for fire and life safety education and community risk reduction.
- Recommends and develops new training programs.
- Prepares lesson plans and create a variety of educational materials and teaching aids.
- Evaluates technical training programs and recommend improvements.
- Provides on-site technical assistance and support to local emergency responders and government officials in relation to community risk reduction efforts.
- Serve as facilitator of fire and life safety education training and educational programs.
- Prepares technical reports and other documents.
- Acts as the official State representative to coordinate State provided emergency services in the event of a regional or Statewide incident as assigned.
- Assists with the delivery of courses when needed, including administering written and practical skills testing.
- Conducts life safety code and fire prevention inspections of facilities at various counties, municipalities, and civic organizations to determine compliance with applicable State laws and regulations.
- Reviews corrective plans and prepares reports on inspection findings.
- Meets with facility representatives to discuss life safety code and fire prevention deficiencies.
- Conducts follow-up inspections and evaluations to ensure compliance.
- Reviews special event plans, observes venue setups and operations to ensure adequate exiting, and reviews emergency command and control procedures and equipment as assigned.
- Performs other duties and special projects as required.
Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).
To be considered for appointment through NY HELPS, or 55 b / c, candidates must meet the open-competitive minimum qualifications for this position.
This title includes a traineeship opportunity and applicants will be appointed to the appropriate level
Substitutions : An associate degree in a related field can substitute for two years of specialized experience; a bachelor's in a related field degree can substitute for four years of experience; a master's degree in a related field can substitute for five years of experience; and a doctorate in a related field can substitute for six years of experience.
Dependent upon qualifications, if appointed as a trainee, successful completion of a one-year or two-year traineeship leads to appointment as a Fire Protection Specialist 1, SG-18.
Successful completion of a qualifying pre-employment physical examination, background check, and drug testing may be required for permanent appointment. Current New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services employee with one year or more permanent, contingent-permanent or 55b / c service as a Fire Protection Specialist 1 and are interested in reassignment; OR are a current New York State employee with one year or more of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55b / c service as a Fire & Safety Representative and eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.
