What are the responsibilities and job description for the English Language Learner (ELL) Instructor position at Stateline Literacy Council?
Description: ELL Instructors report to and work, as needed, with the Executive Director to plan and implement weekly lesson plans, activities, and student assessments. ELL Instructors work to retain and encourage learners who enroll in classes by establishing their learning goals and providing recommendations to the Executive Director for additional tutoring.
Hours: Regular hours will be 7 hours per week, which includes 2.5 hours per class (2 classes per week) and two hours for class prep. Written communication with the Executive Director is required to reschedule class or exceed the allotted hours during any given week. Instructors will arrive at least 15 minutes before class time, which can be counted as prep time. Subject to registration and funding, the Executive Director may elect to change the number of weekly hours with written notice given at least two weeks prior to the change taking effect.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or certificate in a related field.
- TESOL/CELTA certification preferred or willingness to enroll in a certification program upon initial hire.
- Proven ability to work with adults in a multi-lingual, multi-cultural environment. Spanish-speaking proficiency or second language proficiency preferred.
- Exceptional communication, organization, and innovative teaching skills.
- Experience and familiarity with communicative teaching approaches, managing a multi-level classroom, and technology enriched teaching.
- Advanced presentation and public speaking skills.
- Extremely professional, punctual, and personable.
Duties:
- Plan and implement adult ELL/ESL lesson plans, two classes per week, 2.5 hours per class
- Use a variety of teaching techniques and approaches to keep students engaged and
motivated in reaching their goals
- Assign class work and projects to encourage practical English use on student-relevant topics
- Collaborate with and report to the Executive Director to ensure the successful functioning of the program, refer struggling students to the director for tutoring
- Monitor students' progress through attendance records and regular assessments and maintain accurate and up to-date attendance and testing records.
- Provide support for recruitment and retention efforts of learners
- Effectively utilize volunteers and interns to support student learning
- Assist with the implementation of CASAS computer based testing to record improvement.
- Collect course surveys after each semester with the help of the Executive Director
- There may be other duties when the teacher is available, such as participation in fundraising events, potlucks, graduations, registration days, and other agency functions.
Physical Demands:
- While performing the duties of this job, the ELL Instructor is regularly required to stand in front of a class, use hands and fingers to type and work with a computer.
- The ELL Instructor must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
- Vision requirements include close and distant vision. Lighting in the classroom space may be too harsh for persons with seizure disorders or other light sensitivities.
- Hearing requirements include being able to listen in face-to-face and large group situations.
- The ELL Instructor must be able to concentrate and manage a classroom.

Performance Evaluation:
Employment is subject to ongoing positive performance evaluations, funding, and student registration levels. Five students minimum are required for any class to proceed. This position is grant-funded and may have hours reduced or terminated subject to the availability of funds. Advanced notice will be given in such a situation.
