The Skilled Laborer in road and bridge construction performs advanced manual labor tasks requiring specialized knowledge and expertise. This position involves working with construction materials, tools, and equipment to help build and maintain roadways and bridge structures. The Skilled Laborer works closely with other tradespeople, including carpenters, concrete finishers, and heavy equipment operators, and may supervise or mentor unskilled laborers. The individual in this role will ensure the construction site is safe, organized, and productive.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform skilled labor tasks such as form setting, concrete mixing and pouring, masonry work, and other construction-related activities under the guidance of supervisors.
- Assist in the preparation and placement of materials such as asphalt, concrete, steel, and aggregates in road and bridge construction.
- Set up, operate, and maintain specialized construction tools and equipment (e.g., power saws, drills, jackhammers, vibrators, etc.).
- Ensure proper use of materials and tools to minimize waste and maintain high-quality work standards.
- Prepare, install, and dismantle formwork for concrete placement and ensure correct dimensions and alignment.
- Work alongside foremen, carpenters, ironworkers, and other skilled tradespeople to construct bridges, roadways, drainage systems, and other infrastructure projects.
- Assist in the installation of reinforcing steel, road signs, guardrails, and other necessary components.
- Adhere to safety protocols and regulatory requirements, ensuring the construction site is hazard-free.
- Assist in site preparation, including clearing, grading, and compacting materials for roads and bridge foundations.
- Help with material transport, organization, and inventory management on-site.
- Inspect completed work for quality, ensuring it meets project specifications and industry standards.
- Perform maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and tools used on the job site.
- Provide guidance and support to unskilled laborers, ensuring they follow proper safety and operational procedures.
- Participate in team meetings and work closely with supervisors to ensure tasks are completed according to the construction schedule.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area to improve efficiency and safety.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).
- Completion of relevant technical training or certification in construction (preferred).
- Proven experience (typically 2-5 years) in road and bridge construction or a related field.
- Proficient in using hand tools, power tools, and machinery specific to road and bridge construction.
- Strong understanding of construction materials, techniques, and safety standards.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and construction plans.
- Experience with concrete, steel reinforcement, and other construction materials used in road and bridge projects.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to handle complex tasks on-site.
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs. or more).
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, and kneel for long periods.
- Ability to work in various weather conditions and environments.
- Comfortable working at heights, in confined spaces, and in various terrain conditions.
- Capability of operating heavy machinery or equipment with proper training.
Working Conditions:
- Construction sites can be noisy, dusty, and subject to various weather conditions.
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety boots, gloves, and high-visibility clothing must be worn at all times.
