The Unskilled Laborer in road and bridge construction will assist in the manual labor tasks required to support construction and maintenance activities on roadways and bridge structures. This position involves performing basic labor tasks that require physical strength, endurance, and the ability to follow instructions under the supervision of experienced workers. The Unskilled Laborer will be an integral part of a construction team, helping with site preparation, material handling, and general construction support.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist skilled workers (e.g., carpenters, concrete finishers, machine operators) by providing manual labor as needed.
- Perform general labor tasks such as digging, shoveling, lifting, and carrying construction materials like gravel, sand, concrete, and steel.
- Prepare and clean construction sites, including clearing debris, setting up barricades, and ensuring the site is organized and safe.
- Assist in the assembly and disassembly of temporary structures such as scaffolding or formwork.
- Load and unload materials and tools to and from trucks and construction areas.
- Maintain and clean construction equipment and tools.
- Assist with mixing and preparing construction materials (e.g., concrete, mortar).
- Follow all safety protocols and wear appropriate protective equipment at all times.
- Work in various weather conditions, performing physical tasks as required by the job.
- Maintain communication with supervisors and other team members to ensure tasks are completed efficiently.
- Participate in site clean-up and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors or foremen.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).
- Previous experience in construction or labor-related roles (preferred but not required).
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks and work in all weather conditions.
- Willingness to learn and take direction from skilled workers.
- Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and punctuality.
- Physical stamina and strength for lifting, bending, and long periods of standing or walking.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects (up to 50 lbs. or more).
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and kneel for long periods.
- Ability to work in various weather conditions and environments.
- Ability to operate basic hand tools and machinery with supervision (if required).
Working Conditions:
- Construction sites can be noisy, dusty, and subject to various weather conditions.
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety boots, and high-visibility clothing must be worn at all times.
