Job Title: Special Services Teacher
Responsible to: Building Administrator, Director of Special Services
Qualifications:
- Degree – minimum of bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
- Certificate – Missouri teaching certificate in area of assignment. Prefer a teaching certificate in LD, BD and EMH for teachers who are employed in those areas.
- Experience – prefer experience in classroom teaching as well as special services experience.
Primary Functions: To provide a quality instructional program for special services students; to complete teaching duties necessary to the district’s educational program.
Specific Duties:
Program Operation
- Prepares for classroom instruction.
- Implements a variety of effective teaching techniques.
- Participates in the development of Individual Education Plans (IEP) which are appropriate to the students’ abilities and needs.
- Provides for individual differences.
- Tailors instruction to fit the learning objectives identified for special needs students.
- Implements instructional objectives effectively.
- Demonstrates competent knowledge of subject matter.
- Uses a variety of materials.
- Uses instructional time effectively.
- Expects to motivate students.
- Communicates effectively with students.
- Provides evaluative feedback to students.
Classroom Management
- Organizes classroom to promote learning.
- Manages student behavior constructively.
- Provides modifications in discipline policy for BD students as needed through the Individual Education Plan.
Interpersonal Relationships
- Demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships with students.
- Demonstrates patience, respect and understanding for students.
- Demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships with staff.
- Demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships with parents.
Professional Responsibilities

- Supervises volunteers, paraprofessionals, or student interns as assigned.

- Participates in staffings of students with special needs.
- Assists with the identification process of special services students.
- Develops diagnostic summaries in the manner established by the district.
- Follows special education process and procedure as outlined in the District Compliance Plan.
- Provides information needed for all state and federal reports.
- Conducts self at all times as a representative of the school.
- Completes other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Evaluation
- Performance of this position will be evaluated according to board policies and the Carthage R-IX School District adopted model of Performance Based Teacher Evaluation.
