Equine Program Coordinator

Reports to: Adaptive Sports Specialist

Position Status: Full-time / Seasonal / Hourly / Non-benefited

Compensation: $22 - $30/hr., based on experience and certification

Position Summary

The Equine Program Coordinator will assist in overseeing the STARS Riding Center at Zen Ranch to ensure the safety, health, fitness, and overall wellbeing of the horses and the participants. This position will assist in the selection of new horses and the training of existing horses. The Equine Program Coordinator will be an equine instructor, assisting in initial evaluation, lesson plans, and coordinating volunteers during riding lessons. This position will coordinate with the Program Manager as needed and the Operations Manager on registration, and will report to the Adaptive Sports Specialist.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists with the ongoing training and exercising of each horse
  • Responsible for daily care and feeding of the equine herd
  • Responsible for the mucking of stalls and arena area
  • Follow safety protocols for everyone on premises and the equine staff
  • Work with the Program Manager in the training of volunteers
  • Work with Riding Center staff in evaluation of potential therapy horses followed up with a recommendation to the Program Director
  • Performs initial evaluation of participants
  • Assigns horse and tack for participants
  • Reviews volunteer assignments for horses and participants
  • Documents participants progress and adjusts for future lessons
  • Oversees volunteers for group and private lessons
  • Teaches horseback riding lessons
  • · Performs other duties as assigned by the Adaptive Sports Specialist or other Lead Staff

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • One year of experience working with individuals with disabilities. (Preferred)
  • Basic computer knowledge and ability including Word and Excel
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of disabilities
  • Capable of teaching levels 1-6
  • College degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Special Education, or related field (Preferred)
  • PATH certification or willing to require with STARS help

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 150 lbs. with assistance
  • Must have auditory and visual ability to interact with guests, and participants on a daily basis
  • Must be able to successfully manage multiple, high priority tasks in a fast-paced environment

Work Environment:

  • Fast-paced, highly interactive office environment with moderate to high noise levels.
