Position Objective
To assist with maintenance activities on the County's highway system. This position is responsible for installing and repairing traffic signs on County roads, bridges and other facilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
These examples do not include all possible responsibilities in this position and do not limit the assignment of related duties to this classification.
1. Assists with installing and maintaining highway signs, posts, guardrails and fences.
2. Carries signs and performs other lifting and moving of heavy objects and materials.
3. Removes brush and trees from roadways using hands and power tools.
4. Cuts trees and brush with hand power tools.
5. Assists Maintenance Workers as needed.
6. Assists the Mechanic as needed.
7. Attends work regularly and in a timely manner.
8. Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.
Minimum Qualifications and Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
In order to be considered for this position, applicants must possess the following:
- Must be at least 18 years of age as of June 1, 2025
- Possess a valid Minnesota driver's license
- Experience in the operation of road and maintenance equipment
- Experience performing routine preventative maintenance on various types of motor vehicles/equipment
1. Knowledge of highway sign creation, placement, and installation.
2. Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of a variety of light and moderately complex construction and maintenance equipment.
3. Knowledge of the Stearns County highway system.
4. Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions involved in the use of tools, equipment, and vehicles associated with sign creation, complex construction and maintenance equipment.
5. Ability to perform strenuous work under varying weather conditions.
6. Ability to maintain a safe work environment.
7. Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.

Work Environment and Physical Demands
The primary responsibilities for this position will be performed approximately 100% of the time outdoors. May involve exposure to poison ivy and other noxious weeds. Exposure to heat and inclement weather. Some potential for accidents and some exposure to multiple recognized health hazards. Medium physical requirements. Ability to lift 75 pounds occasionally. All employees are required to reside within the state of Minnesota.
Extent of Supervision or Guidance Provided
Works is performed under the general supervision of the Operations Supervisor.

Minimal.

This position has a normal work schedule of 6:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday.
