Position Objective
To provide seasonal assistance to the Engineering division at Highway. This position is responsible for performing a variety of entry level duties related to engineering, surveying, drafting, and design.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
These examples do not include all possible responsibilities in this position and do not limit the assignment of related duties to this classification.
1. Serves as remote worker on highway survey party; learns and operates technical engineering instruments; plants stakes, clears brush, places markers; acts as flag person.
2. Learns and performs drafting and design work under close supervision, such as plotting cross sections, transposing field topography notes, computing various quantities, and drafting plan sheets.
3. Takes traffic counts; researches and compiles traffic information from maps and files.
4. Assists in construction inspection; takes concrete or rock core samples and soil samples; grades and scales materials; learns recording of pay quantities; learns testing of concrete and bituminous.
5. Maintains engineering equipment and supplies.
6. Attends work regularly and in a timely manner.
7. Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.
In order to be considered for this position, applicants must possess the following:
- Must be at least 18 years of age as of May 1, 2025 (or effective date of hire)
- Possess a valid Minnesota driver's license
- Experience or education in the practices, equipment, and techniques of drafting
- Experience or education in engineering and survey practices
- Experience or education working with engineering maps and records

Work Environment and Physical Demands
The primary responsibilities for this position will be performed 85% of the time outdoors and 15% indoors. Will have some exposure to health hazards and accidents; requires a moderate to high level of physical effort. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. All employees are required to reside within the state of Minnesota.
Extent of Supervision or Guidance Provided
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Assistant County Engineer.

Minimal.

This position has a normal work schedule of 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday; may require some evening and weekend hours. This position has a flexible start and end date between May 1 – August 30.
