Job Summary:

The Dirt Foreman for SWX is responsible for overseeing and managing the daily operations of earthwork and grading projects. This role involves planning, supervising, and coordinating the activities of the crew, equipment, and materials to ensure projects are completed safely, on time, and within budget.

The Dirt Foreman must effectively communicate with team members, clients, and inspectors, and ensure compliance with all safety protocols and project specifications.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Plan, supervise, and manage daily operations of crew, equipment, and materials at multiple job sites.
  • Operate a variety of heavy machinery including Excavators, Loaders, Skid Steers, Dozers, Scrapers, and Compactors.
  • Interpret and execute grading plans and elevations, ensuring precise soil movement.
  • Oversee the installation of installation of site work projects, storm sewer projects, sanitary sewer projects, and waterline projects. .
  • Understand local construction codes, inspections, and guidelines.
  • Set up and use various construction technologies such as GPS, lasers, and levels to achieve accurate grade tolerances.
  • Adhere to all company and OSHA safety protocols related to excavations and trenches.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, team members, clients, and inspectors.
  • Maintain situational awareness around equipment to ensure safe operation and avoid hazards such as utility lines, other machinery, personnel, or falling debris.
  • Conduct pre- and post-operation checks on equipment and report any issues to supervisors.
  • Perform basic equipment repairs when field mechanics are not available on-site.
  • Coordinate machine movements with crew members using hand and audio signals.
  • Collaborate with your superintendent, project manager, and team to ensure work meets project specifications.
  • Plan work schedules and assign duties to maintain adequate staff for effective performance of activities and response to fluctuating workloads.
  • Ensure accurate adherence to plans while maintaining schedule and budget.
  • Provide daily correspondence to the Project Manager related to progress and performance.
  • Undertake additional tasks as assigned.

Education & Skill Requirements:

  • 4 years' experience in a Dirt/Grading Foreman role or equivalent.
  • Experience managing crews of 5 people maintaining schedules and assigning duties, daily.
  • Ability to safely operate a variety of heavy equipment including Heavy Dozers, Heavy Track Hoes, Rollers, Back Hoes, and Excavators, etc.

Physical Demands:

  • Climb and maintain balance.
  • Fully utilize hands and arms; stand, kneel, bend, crawl, or crouch for extended periods.
  • Have good vision (naturally or corrected).
  • Ability to sit, stand, or walk continuously.
  • Ability to bend, squat, climb stairs, and lift frequently
  • Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to work in hot or cold conditions, outdoors, and at high elevations.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle safely and efficiently.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a clean driving record.
