Purpose of Position:
The role of the Step Up Louisiana New Orleans Chapter Organizer will be to support and organize with Step Up Louisiana’s New Orleans Membership Chapter by staffing the Member Retention Recruitment Committee (MRRC) in New Orleans and playing an integral role in the membership recruitment, retention of the membership, and leadership development. This will include facilitating regular meetings, providing support and strategic direction for the outcomes of the committee.

Step Up Louisiana, along with our sister organization Step Up for Action, is a community based organization committed to building power to win education and economic justice for all. We work with multiracial and intergenerational Louisianans to “Step Up” by campaigning, organizing from a racial justice perspective, and holding public officials accountable. We organize with parents, workers, students, and community members to disrupt systemic oppression in our schools and workplaces through voter education, advocacy, and action.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Leading creative, relevant, broad, and intensive outreach efforts to low-wage workers, parents, clergy, and community activists
- Building one-on-one relationships with members of the New Orleans chapter
- Follow up with new recruits/contacts from the canvassing team with consistent 1:1s
- Identifying and developing leaders to guide and lead campaigns, and working with our members to develop strategies for how to win our campaigns
- Supporting and organizing the monthly chapter meetings for Step Up Louisiana’s New Orleans Chapter
- Recruiting active dues-paying members who align with our values and who are active in our campaigns.
- Training member-leaders including leading regular member leadership orientations
- Participating in GOTV and civic engagement efforts
- Developing member-leadership through a defined leadership ladder program
- Educating the membership about our core issues
- Facilitate/Manage the Membership Orientation activities for the New Orleans membership chapter
- Supporting other activity of the organization
- Facilitating individual/group meetings to discuss and plan organizing campaigns.
- Motivating individuals and groups of community leaders to take action.
- Working to involve community partners in organizing campaigns.
- Grassroots fundraising and base building for Step Up Louisiana
- Manage/Facilitate the activities of the New Orleans Membership Recruitment and Retention Committee (MRRC) with weekly/bi-weekly meetings as needed; supporting the recruitment of new members and retaining them, developing the weekly/bi-weekly meeting structure, and providing support and strategic direction for the outcomes of the committee
- Manage/Facilitate the activities of the Political Committee for the New Orleans Membership chapter with weekly/bi-weekly meetings as needed; manage the timeline for the endorsement process
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- At least 2 years of organizing experience in labor, community, faith, student, or political organizations or campaigns
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (listening, speaking, and writing)
- Commitment to the social justice movement and passion for winning change with low-income people
- Ability to organize community members to take action on multiple issues for local neighborhood campaigns as well as city and statewide campaigns
- Experience working independently and managing a volunteer team
- Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment, be detail-oriented and solution-oriented
- Possession of excellent listening skills and the ability to comprehend the concerns of others.
- Experience in making and following through on a work plan.
- The ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Willingness to conduct house visits, school visits, and work site visits.
- Willingness to travel for trainings and meetings
- Ability to work long and irregular hours, including some nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Possession of basic map navigation skills a plus.
- Own a car with insurance and comfortable driving in that car with members
- Ability to use a computer for word processing and be comfortable with the internet and social media posting.
- Participation in Step Up as a member, canvasser, or graduate of the Organizer In Training program a plus.
Physical Requirements:
The position is based in New Orleans and the expectation is that the New Orleans Chapter Organizer will work out of the New Orleans office in-person during the work week. There is regular work hours travel to the other Step Up Louisiana offices for meetings, organizing, and events. Work is generally performed from the office setting or other location to complete the required assignments of the position. There may be period of long and extended hours and a minimal amount of overnight travel including to Baton Rouge and other out-of-state locations may be required approximately 6 times a year.
Benefits:
The annual gross salary for this position is $45,000. Benefits include, a car stipend, phone reimbursement, employer paid medical, dental, and vision with an employer contribution to dependent coverage, paid holidays, vacation and sick time.
