Description

Under the direction of a Program Manager and the Rehabilitation Supervisor the Rehabilitation Services Aide (RSA) assists clients in support of their treatment plan and oversees the general orderliness and safety of the group or congregate living environment to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

Direct Service:

Provide reliable staff coverage of agency sites and responds to crisis situations during overnight hours.

Assesses client complaints or problem behaviors and reports these to the On Call Staff, log/memo book, and shift report or on an Unusual Event Report as required.

Participates as an active member of the client’s Community Support Team as directed by the Rehabilitation Supervisor.

Develops rapport and therapeutic relationships with clients in support of their Treatment Plan. Responds to and reports changes in client’s physical conditions and or complaints of medication side effects as required.

Understands and can properly use the 911 emergency system for medical and other emergencies and the agency on-call system for psychiatric crisis.

Administrative:

Attends all required staff meetings and training.

Communicates site and clients’ issues through the communication log/memo book and shift report procedures as required.

Knows the emergency preparedness plan and the location of gas, water and electrical controls of current work site, and the correct operation of fire extinguishers.

Maintains clean and safe general environment of the agency site and grounds, including reporting safety or health issues as required, including the practice of infection control and knowledge of blood borne pathogens. 

Observes client self-medication administration through use of the Medication Observation Record maintains a medication cart and completes the Medication Error Report as required.  

Adheres to client’s rights under the Mental Health Code, Confidentiality Act, HIPAA and Rule 50 of the Office of Inspector General, abides by Stepping Stones Code of Ethics and Professional Practice. 

Adheres to Stepping Stones’ policies and procedures.

Performs other duties as assigned.

RSA Positions:

The RSA works 12-hour awake overnight shifts in the 24-hour supervised housing sites. The primary role of this job is to provide coverage to the site during “off” hours, so time off for these positions may be limited.

Qualification Requirements:

 To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess problem solving skills, patience, good reasoning and judgment. Must be 21 years of age, have demonstrated skills in the field of services to adults or children, have demonstrated the ability to work within structured system and accept supervision and have demonstrated the ability to work constructively with clients, treatment resources and the community. 

Education:

Minimum formal requirement: high school diploma or GED.  Formal training is provided by the agency and must be completed in a timely fashion as a requirement of continuing employment.

Contacts include Director of Services, Chief Executive Officer, Program Managers, Mental Health Professionals, Rehabilitation Supervisors, On Call staff, other RSA's, clients, families, guardians, some public agencies and 911.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

The RSA is usually assigned to particular site but is considered an employee of the agency and can be reassigned to any site as deemed necessary by the Rehabilitation Supervisor or On-call Supervisor.

Physical Requirements:

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to sit (approx. 6 hours), stand, bend and climb stairs, carry (up to 30 lbs.), lift from floor to waist (up to 30 lbs.), lift from waist to overhead (up to 10 lbs.), push (up to 50 lbs), pull (up to 50 lbs.).

Work Conditions:

The environment is usually comfortable and quite during the late night and early morning hours.  Moderate noise during the morning hours and all activates take place in the living environment. There is risk involved with client contact. While working direct support persons must not be concurrently engaged in child or family care, personal business or errands, personal hobbies, or any other pursuit which would diminish their effectiveness in the provision of necessary and appropriate programming, including ensuring the safety and well-being of those in their care.
