Financial Assistance Case Manager
FLSA: Full-Time Professional/Non-Exempt
STEPS is seeking a compassionate and resourceful Case Manager to provide direct financial crisis support to employees of Skookum. This role will involve assisting clients in navigating financial hardships, developing financial literacy skills, and connecting with community resources to achieve long-term stability. The Case Manager will help clients create realistic budgets, manage debt, and, in some cases, facilitate the payment of overdue bills for essential needs such as housing, utilities, transportation, and food. This position is responsible to and supervised by the Vice President of Administration.
DUTIES:
1. Conduct confidential intake assessments of client’s financial situations to identify immediate and long-term needs and eligibility.
2. Provide tailored support to address financial crises, including facilitating the payment of overdue bills for essential services.
3. Develop personalized budgeting plans to help clients manage their income and expenses effectively. Provide guidance on debt management strategies, including negotiating with creditors and creating repayment plans.
4. Educate employees on financial literacy, covering topics such as saving, credit scores, and responsible spending habits.
5. Responsible for traveling weekly to Fort Gregg-Adams, monthly to Fort Eustis, Yorktown, and Fort Pickett, and quarterly to Camp Lejeune. Twice a year to Maryland and DC sites.
6. Responsible for assisting employees in California, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, Texas, New Mexico, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Kansas virtually and may visit any of these locations if there is an increase in need. (If mutually agreed upon with Skookum)
7. Assist employees in accessing emergency financial assistance programs and other available resources.
8. Responsible for updating the monthly Skookum report and financial expense spreadsheet. Track outcomes to measure the impact of financial support initiatives.
9. Responsible for completing public relation activities as needed to enhance community knowledge of STEPS’ services.
10. Responsible for maintaining a positive, professional and open relationship with local service/referral agencies, including but not limited to customers, employers, job site supervisors, internal departments, parents/guardians, care staff, and the public
11. Responsible for inputting data to maintain confidential case files, documentation, and case notes within required time frames.
12. Maintain a non-judgmental, empathetic approach to build trust and rapport with employees.
13. Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college/university with a degree in Social Work, Human Services, Counseling, or a related field. Experience working in government funded programs preferred. A combination of education/work experience may be substituted.
- 2 years of experience in case management, financial counseling, or a related field, preferably working with individuals with disabilities.
- Strong knowledge of financial literacy principles, including budgeting, debt management, and resource planning.
- Familiarity with community resources and support programs addressing housing, utilities, food insecurity, and transportation.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with a high level of empathy and cultural sensitivity.
- Strong problem-solving and organizational abilities, with attention to detail and confidentiality.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and case management software.

21. Must be able to physically transfer client from a wheelchair in a safe manner.
22. Must have the physical stamina to work at least 12 hours per day.
23. Must be able to tolerate heat and humidity.

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: Up to $31.25 per hour
Expected hours: No less than 40 per week
