PEER RECOVERY SPECIALIST **

Organizational Relationship

A. Reports to the Executive Director and the Assistant Director

B. Coordination: Coordinates with the state institutions and city jails as well as

the staff of STEP-UP, Incorporated

Summary of Primary Duties

The Peer Recovery Specialist’s role is to support others in recovery from substance abuse disorder or assist individuals from jails or prisons. The Peer Recovery Specialist must serve as a role model, mentor, advocate, and motivator to recovering and returning individuals to help prevent relapse and promote long-term recovery. Also, the specialist must demonstrate an ability to share personal; experiences and to develop authentic peer-to-peer relationships.

A. Maintain client activity logs, reports and records in STEP-UP’s database.

B. Provide recovery education to service recipients for every phase of the recovery journey from pre-recovery engagement (from prison or jail) recovery stabilization, and sustained recovery maintenance.

C. Provide a model for both people in recovery and staff by demonstrating that recovery is possible.

D. Assist recovering persons to identify their personal interests, goals, strengths, and weaknesses regarding recovery.

E. Promote self-advocacy by assisting recovering persons to have their voice fully heard; their needs, goals and objective established as the focal point of rehabilitation and clinical services.

F. Actively identify and support linkages to community resources (communities of recovery, educational, vocational and skills development, soc8al cultural, spiritual resources, mutual self-help groups, professional services, etc.) that support the recovery person’s goals and interests. This will involve a collaborative effort including the recovering person, agency staff and other relevant stakeholders.

G. Support connections to community based, mutual self-help groups. Link individuals to appropriate professional resources when needed. Provide vision-driven hope and encouragement for opportunities at varying levels of involvement in community-based activities (e.g. work, school, relationships, physical activity, self-directed hobbies etc.).

H. Develop relationships with community groups/agencies in partnership with others in the agency.

I. As things evolve and knowledge increases, visit community resources with the recovering persons to assist them in becoming familiar with potential opportunities such as workforce development, social services, and other similar agencies.

J. Work with the STEP-UP staff to assist when ready to have the recovering person to obtain training, employment or other services that are available to transition.

K. Identify any barriers (internal or external) that the person may have to fully participate in services or employment.

L. Be responsible for putting all information in the database about the status of the participant so at any time staff will have the knowledge as to what the recovery person needs and the status of the participant.

M. Maintain contact by phone, in person or email with the recovery person after they leave

the program to insure their ongoing success and to provide re-engagement support in partnership with other agencies.

Minimum Education and Other Experience

The Peer Recovery Specialist should have a minimum of a high school diploma and have worked within the last two years with at least twelve months total of successful experience either part-time or full-time work experience.

A. Individuals must have an understanding of and respect for each individual’s unique path to recovery.

B. Must have a working knowledge of the drug and alcohol treatment system and a demonstrated commitment to the recovery community.

C. Must be a certified Peer Recovery Specialist and completed the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services Peer Recovery Specialist training.

D. Must pass a criminal background check.

E. Other duties as directed by the Executive Director or Assistant Director.
