The Senior Packaging Engineer in our St. Louis, MO facility is responsible for conceptualizing, designing, developing, revising, coordinating, and implementing packaging structures for all products under the authority of STERIS St. Louis Operations. You will be responsible for products produced both internally on-site and externally by third party contract packagers. In this role, the Senior Packaging Engineer identifies and proposes advanced packaging technologies to better satisfy internal and external customer needs.
- The work location is 100% onsite in St. Louis, MO 63133
- This is a day shift Monday – Friday. Must have ability to work occasional Saturday hours based on business needs.

Design, develop, and implement effective, creative, cost appropriate packaging’s consistent with the objectives STERIS Marketing, Product Development, Manufacturing, Regulatory, Quality Systems, Engineering, and Purchasing.
Ensure that packaging’s complies with hazardous materials transportation, FDA, EPA, cGMP, and ISO regulations and guidelines.
Identify, support, and implement packaging solutions for new product introductions, cost reductions, component and process improvements, regulatory compliance, and problem and complaint resolution.
Identify and implement advanced packaging technologies to better satisfy internal and external customer needs.
Identify, develop, and implement, as approved, functional area enhancements in processes, systems, procedures, and technologies toward expanding functional deliverables.
Implement, coordinate, and / or supervise the evaluation and testing of new and revised packaging components, including Journey Hazard Testing for non-hazardous products applications.
Make package change recommendations and develop component specifications based on test results. Maintain all test records in an orderly, readily retrievable format.
Ensure compliance with applicable requirements for domestic and international multi-modal safe transport of listed hazardous materials products including the United States Department of Transportation (DOT), International Air Transport Association (IATA), International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG), and United Nations (UN).
Implement, coordinate, and / or supervise applicable design qualification testing, periodic re-testing, and, as applicable, production testing, as required.
Maintain current knowledge in hazardous materials packaging design requirements.
Review and update (or create new) Packaging Structures Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure correct documentation of actual functional processes.
Review Packaging Structures Related SOPs and functional area processes to identify and implement improvements in output capacity, accuracy, reduction of non-valued added effort, and project planning / scheduling / status reporting.
Develop reports and documentation to facilitate communication in support of the Packaging Structures function.
Mentor junior contributors to promote individual growth.
Achieve an injury free personal safety record.
Bachelor’s degree in engineering or chemistry (Mechanical, Packaging, or Chemical).
5 or more years of engineering / packaging experience, preferably in the pharmaceutical and / or medical device industry with a comprehensive knowledge of packaging technology Design and materials.
Knowledge of MS Office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Experience using AutoCAD, preferred.
Knowledge of Lean manufacturing principles. Participation in Kaizen Events or Triage Events, preferred.,
New product design and packaging solutions experience, preferred.
