Sterling Search Partners is helping a Birmingham client with its search for an EHS Director. The EHS Director is responsible for overseeing the company's environmental, health, and safety initiatives and ensuring that all operations comply with local, state, and federal regulations. This role involves developing, implementing, and managing policies, procedures, and strategies that minimize risks to employees, the environment, and the community while maintaining a safe and productive workplace.


Key Responsibilities:

EHS Program Development and Management:

  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve the company’s EHS policies, programs, and procedures to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Conduct regular assessments and audits to identify potential hazards and recommend corrective actions.
  • Manage and oversee EHS-related training for all employees, ensuring they are aware of safety protocols and procedures.

Compliance and Regulatory Management:

  • Ensure the organization complies with all applicable federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulations, including OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other relevant agencies.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records and reports required for regulatory compliance (e.g., incident reports, safety audits, environmental impact assessments).

Risk Management:

  • Identify and assess workplace hazards and environmental risks, providing recommendations to mitigate or eliminate risks.
  • Develop emergency response and disaster recovery plans, including training employees on emergency procedures.
  • Lead the investigation of accidents, near misses, and safety incidents, implementing corrective actions as needed.

Sustainability Initiatives:

  • Drive the organization’s sustainability efforts, such as waste reduction, energy conservation, and resource optimization.
  • Lead initiatives that minimize the environmental impact of operations and enhance corporate social responsibility.

Reporting and Documentation:

  • Prepare and present EHS reports to senior management, highlighting key metrics, incidents, compliance issues, and improvement strategies.
  • Coordinate and communicate with regulatory agencies, ensuring that necessary permits and documentation are maintained.

Leadership and Collaboration:

  • Lead a team of EHS professionals and work collaboratively with other departments to integrate EHS considerations into everyday operations.
  • Advise senior leadership on EHS matters and recommend strategic improvements to enhance safety and environmental performance.

Incident Management and Investigation:

  • Oversee the investigation and root cause analysis of incidents to prevent recurrence.
  • Implement corrective and preventive actions to improve safety and compliance standards.


Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or a related field. A Master's degree is a plus.
  • Experience: Minimum of 8–10 years of experience in EHS management, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Certifications: EHS certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or Environmental Professional (EP) preferred.
  • Knowledge: Deep understanding of OSHA regulations, environmental regulations, sustainability practices, and risk management.
  • Skills: Strong leadership, communication, problem-solving, and analytical skills. Ability to influence and collaborate across all levels of the organization.
