Job Description
The Library Media Center Clerk assists the ECSD’s librarian in maintaining a welcoming, organized, and efficient library media center. This position involves a variety of administrative and clerical tasks, including helping students find and check out books, managing library resources, and maintaining an orderly environment.
Key Responsibilities
Customer Service: Assist students and staff with locating books and other media materials, providing guidance on library use and procedures.
Check-out and Check-in: Operate the library's circulation system to check out books and other materials to students and staff, ensuring proper documentation and timely return.
Cataloging and Shelving: Organize and shelve books, ensuring that materials are in the correct locations and that the library is well-maintained and accessible.
Inventory Management: Assist in maintaining inventory records, tracking lost or damaged books, and conducting periodic inventory checks.
Technology Support: Help students with technology-related needs such as computer access, printers, and other library media equipment.
Library Organization: Maintain a neat and orderly library environment, including keeping work areas clean and ensuring materials are organized and in good condition.
Assist with Programs: Support library events, activities, and programs, such as book fairs, reading challenges, or special projects.
Assist in Preparing Materials: Help with preparing materials for lessons, displays, or other educational activities within the library.
Communication: Assist in promoting library programs and services through bulletin boards, newsletters, or social media updates. Communicate with families in a variety of ways.
Clerical Duties: Perform general clerical tasks, such as filing, typing, and answering phone calls, as needed.
Skills and Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or equivalent; additional training or coursework in library science or education is a plus.
Experience: Previous experience working in a library, educational environment, or customer service is preferred.
Technical Skills: Familiarity with library management or other database software and basic office equipment.
Organizational Skills: Ability to multitask and manage time effectively in a busy environment.
Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work with students, staff, and visitors.
Attention to Detail: Careful in handling materials and ensuring that resources are correctly cataloged and in good condition.
Patience and Enthusiasm: Ability to positively connect with children and fostering a love of reading and learning.
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift and move books and other library materials (typically up to 25 pounds).
Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time.
Working Conditions
The Library Media Center Clerk works in a school library environment with interactions with children, staff, and visitors.
The position may require flexible hours depending on school needs, especially during special events or projects.
