Stevenson School is seeking a Director of Engineering and Applied Science to start

July 1, 2025. Reporting to the Head of the Upper Division, the Director of Engineering and Applied Science (DEAS) will help lead the development of a state-of-the-art math, science and engineering center (MSEC) which is on track to be completed in time for the start of the 2026-27 school year. The DEAS will work in close collaboration with the head of the upper division, school president, architects, project managers, and advancement team to guide  both the final stages of construction and the opening of an educational space that will solidify Stevenson’s position as a leader and model in STEM education. With Stanford’s Hopkins Marine Labs, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), the Naval Postgraduate Center for Military Research in Engineering all located on the Monterey Peninsula and Silicon Valley within an easy drive of campus, the DEAS will develop and cultivate meaningful external relationships and compelling programming in collaboration with community partners. The incoming director will shape the educational experience for current and generations of future Stevenson students.

The ideal director of engineering and applied science candidate will be a dynamic and experienced leader who will bring a demonstrated record of leadership in math and/or applied sciences and demonstrated success partnering with internationally renowned institutions. The DEAS will continue the School’s work to further evolve and enhance a cohesive program of study that capitalizes on the outstanding math and science preparation provided by the existing departments and offers opportunities for students to apply their conceptual understanding to real-world problem solving. In addition to the above, the DEAS will supervise the teaching of courses identified as applied science, applied mathematics, computer science, engineering, and robotics, and work collaboratively with upper division academic leadership to evaluate programs and faculty.

While primarily a 10-month/year position, the DEAS role includes a summer component and project work at the request of the Head of the Upper Division or President of the School. In keeping with Stevenson’s core values, we seek candidates who demonstrate a commitment to equity and inclusion.  Candidates from underrepresented backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities include:

  • Teach up to 3 sections of math, science, and/or digital fabrication, to be determined based upon area(s) of academic and applied expertise

  • Promote applied science activities such as the MATE robotics program
  • Support the continued development of and evaluation of scope and sequence of the computer science program
  • Participate in MSEC project completion as detailed above
  • Collaborate with divisional leadership and faculty in the continued development and enhancement of the PK-12 math and science sequence
  • Showcase Stevenson’s commitment to STEM education at admissions and advancement events
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Demonstrated track record of innovative leadership of an academic department or comparable program
  • Demonstrated experience in curriculum design and development
  • Experience teaching or leading an applied math or engineering program
  • Highly developed leadership skills and the enthusiasm to collaborate generously and productively with faculty and administrators
  • Proficiency with SIS and Google Suite
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
  • A positive outlook and sense of humor appropriate to the age group
  • Impeccable integrity and impressive work ethic
  • Highly developed professional judgment and commitment to maintaining discretion and confidentiality
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and build trust
  • Highest level of professionalism and commitment to confidentiality
  • Commitment to being part of a diverse, equitable and inclusive school community
  • Other duties as assigned
