What You’ll Do…
As a Biological Scientist, you will play a pivotal role in supporting the Influenza Division of the CDC by conducting laboratory testing that involves growing viruses in cell cultures, ELISA, serology, and similar assays. Your work will contribute to the development and assessment of diagnostic methods and vaccines to improve responses to potential outbreaks.
Key Responsibilities & Expected Outcomes
- Conduct Research & Diagnostic Tasks – Perform advanced scientific research and laboratory testing, including stock preparation, cloning, isolation, and inactivation in BSL2E and BSL3E environments.
- Develop Documentation – Create and maintain SOPs, technical reports, laboratory manuals, and records of all laboratory activities, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
- Support Laboratory Operations – Oversee logistics, inventory, specimen tracking, and database management while maintaining laboratory safety and security standards.
- Collaborate & Train – Work both independently and as part of a team, providing training and guidance to junior staff and fostering effective communication with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ensure Compliance & Safety – Adhere to laboratory safety, security, and regulatory requirements, including CLIA, ISO, and OSHA standards, while supporting assay development and improvement initiatives.

- Expertise in microbiology and virology techniques.
- Familiarity with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
- Understanding of laboratory safety regulations, including CLIA, ISO, and OSHA standards.
- Proficiency in aseptic techniques and working in high-security laboratory environments.
- Strong analytical skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other data analysis tools.
- Exceptional organizational and documentation skills.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s in Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or a related biological science.
- 2 years of relevant experience, with proficiency in growing viruses in cell cultures, ELISA, serology, and similar assays being essential.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or a related biological science.
- 5 years of relevant experience, particularly in influenza research
- Virology and wet laboratory experience is highly preferred.
- Familiarity with advanced laboratory standards and techniques.
Compensation & Work Environment
- Salary Range: $85,000 – $95,000, dependent on experience.
- Environment: Work will be performed in a climate-controlled laboratory environment.
