Job Summary The position will manage, prepare, and direct funeral services, conduct, and coordinate the delivery of decedents to the mortuary. The position will prepare the decedent for services and/or internment. The primary objectives are to provide the highest quality services and products and satisfy all client families' needs. Geographic boundaries for this position may encompass more than one firm or location in each area of multiple company operations. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

3. Delivery of decedent to mortuary (where applicable). This most often involves contacting client family members, affecting the initial coordination of activities with the medical examiner, and satisfying other legal requirements, e.g., FTC Rules.
4. Follow company standards by initiating a Chain of Custody, personal effects documentation, etc., as job duties require.
5. Wear and always use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when performing job duties that require such equipment.
6. Comply with the rules, regulations, policies, and procedures as outlined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Stith Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Inc. Policies and Procedures.
7. Embalm the decedent and cosmetology according to industry standards and practices, technical, safety, and sanitary requirements, and home office direction.
8. Dress and position the decedent in the casket or alternative container and deliver it to the visitation area if the client's family requests it.
9. Record the embalming of all deceased persons for future reference and medical and legal purposes.
10. Maintain all embalming instrumentation and equipment as specified by the manufacturer’s instructions.
11. Treat decedents with respect and decorum.
12. Maintain a clean operating area and equipment and comply with all governing rules and regulations regarding sanitation and hazardous waste.
13. May be required to perform Pre-arrangement Advance Planning Specialist function of assisting client families with requested service arrangements, selection of funeral merchandise and other products and financial arrangements. Where licensed and applicable.
14. Plan and place casket in visitation area, adjust light fixtures and arrange or supervise arrangement of floral tributes.
15. Direct casket bearers in placement and removal of casket to and from funeral coach, chapel or other place of service and interment location.
16. Advise client families on arranging funerals and supervise funeral service activities in accordance with each family’s wishes.
17. Coordinate all service arrangements and details with clergy, other presiding persons, and fraternal or military organizations that may participate in conducting the funeral service.
18. Knowledge of the geographic location of all hospitals, cemeteries, crematories, churches, synagogues, and other places where funeral services may be held, including traffic patterns to and from each location and the entrance and exit points of each building.
19. Communicate with clergy/celebrant as to the preferences of the family when conducting individual funeral services (i.e. musical preference, open or closed casket, traditional or contemporary attitudes).
20. May lead funeral procession from place of service to interment site.
21. Supervise and assist with visitation by ushering and directing families and visitors of the deceased to and from the visitation area and where services are conducted.
22. Participate in market outreach activities including one-on-one presentations, group presentations and event participation in accordance with pre-established home office standards in furtherance of our home office business growth objectives; encouraged to participate in community, civic or fraternal organizations and state and local Funeral associations as a part of local promotional and outreach efforts.
23. Supervise and assist the transportation of family members assuring timely departure and arrival as agreed with client family.
24. Arrange family automobiles in the funeral procession following the client family’s wishes.
25. Ensure that all associates participating in each funeral service are performing their assigned functions and are in place at designated times.
26. Arrange and coordinate the shipment of decedents to and from other cities and localities.
27. Supervise and assist certain operational and managerial functions in the manager's absence.
28. Participate in the general upkeep of the building, grounds, and cars.
29. Where applicable, be certified to operate a crematory retort and follow standard procedures and record-keeping.
30. Remain up to date on company learning, policies, and procedures as assigned.
31. Light housekeeping to keep the facilities and grounds in perfect order. This includes keeping work areas tidy, picking up litter on the grounds and general straightening up. Educational, Licensure and Skill Requirements
32. Take part in on-call rotations on nights, weekends, and holidays.
- A two-year college degree or completion of a specialized course of study at a business or trade school or job-specific skills acquired through on-the-job training or apprenticeship program.
- A minimum of one year of similar or related experience.
- Valid Funeral Directors’ License in the location jurisdiction or the ability to reciprocate license.
- Possess the necessary licensure or other certification to meet local or state legal requirements to perform the functions of a Funeral Director. Possess and maintain essential licensure or certification to meet local, state, and federal legal requirements to perform the function of embalming.
- Must be able to effectively communicate with all levels, including management, associates, home office, and families.
- Passed both sections of the National Board Exam (NBE) as per state requirements.
- Possess a valid driver’s license and meet the driving performance standards as determined by management. MVR’s may be reviewed annually for compliance, and any conviction or at-fault accidents should be immediately reported to management. Essential Physical Responsibilities
- Ability to tolerate exposure to hazardous substances subject to government requirements; occasional lifting, pushing, and pulling, with assistance, of objects up to approximately 600 pounds; manual dexterity required for clerical tasks; occasional stooping, bending, pushing, pulling and carrying objects weighing up to approximately 30 pounds for short distances.
