Purpose and Scope

Construction Foremen fulfill an important role in the success of the company, working under the direction and supervision of a Project Manager or Estimator to lead in construction of post-frame structures and related work as specified by each job and according to the blueprints. Foremen play a significant role in meeting job goals and are encouraged to pursue education to further their knowledge and develop additional skills that will help them advance into additional leadership roles. Because the construction industry is occasionally dependent upon uncontrollable factors, foremen may occasionally be assigned to projects or tasks in other departments.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Construction Foreman include but are not limited to:

  • Live the company mission/vision and be able to pass that along to your crew.
  • Exceed customer expectations. You will be the face of the company on the jobsite.
  • Responsible for job site safety and that all work is performed in a safe and professional manner.
  • Build up, encourage, and train your construction crew.
  • Model teachability and initiative every day
  • Attend all foreman meetings to review safety issues, new company policy, situations observed in the field, and other things that come up during the month. This non-mandatory meeting is a great way to add your input into the company direction.
  • Make sure all paper work is turned into office at required dates.
  • Make sure time sheets are filled out on a daily basis and are mailed to the office at the end of the week.
  • Responsible to see that company policy is followed.
  • Track job progress and notify your estimator of material / labor overruns in a timely fashion.
  • Responsible for resolving any conflict, attendance issues, performance issues on job site. You are given the authority to reprimand via verbal warning, written warning, sending employee home for the day, and recommendation for termination. Conversely, you are given the authority to positively shape your crew with verbal recognition and on-the-spot awards for above/beyond performance.
  • Always interact with customers in a positive, courteous, and upbeat attitude, with a primary focus on customer service and satisfaction.
  • On a daily basis you will need to assess the job priorities and will need to assign crew members to appropriate tasks to keep the job on schedule.
  • Need to make sure the crew members have the necessary materials, tools, and equipment to ensure a good daily output.
  • Spend time studying the plans to make sure costly mistakes are not made due to lack of planning.
  • To the best of your ability you will need to be sure jobs are completed on time.
  • Make sure all crew tools are in working order and tools that are shared between crews are returned to the office.
  • Keep crew truck clean and make sure routine maintenance is performed at regularly scheduled intervals.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP

Carpenters report to their direct foreman day to day. Foreman directly report to the Project Manager. The Project Manager will work with the Foreman to plan jobs, troubleshoot issues, and develop training plans for carpenters.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education and Training – Vocational training in carpentry desired but not required.

Experience – 3 to 5 years of post frame carpentry experience required. Experience overseeing a carpentry crew required.

Additional Skills or Requirements – Valid Virginia Driver’s License required along with an acceptable driving record as defined by our insurer and reliable transportation to and from job sites within a 90 mile radius of Harrisonburg. Must be able to communicate effectively with other team members, management, and customers.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to perform basic physical tasks normal to the construction industry, including but not limited to kneeling/bending for long periods, walking on uneven, sloped, or narrow surfaces (good balance is critical), climbing ladders, crawling, and lifting at least 75 lbs. on a routine basis and over 100 on occasion. Must be able to work with arms above head level for sustained periods of time; must be able to work in hot and cold temperatures and in adverse weather and job site conditions. Must be comfortable working at heights. Must be able to read a tape measure. Must be able to use a hammer for a prolonged period of time.

Pay: $27.00 - $32.00 per hour
