Properties on Mount Desert Island are seeking passionate and motivated individuals to help complete their team for the 2024 season. The position has a range of duties, all of which are an integral part of maintaining the estate grounds, facilities, and gardens. This is a full time, seasonal position running from April 1 thru November. This is a small organization - a positive attitude and good work ethic is essential. This is a great opportunity for a recent college graduate with a degree in horticulture or related field to gain valuable work experience in high-end estate gardening working with a skilled, professional team. Growth potential - two of last year's Grounds Assistants were hired as full-time gardeners.
PRIMARY DUTIES:
- Grounds maintenance; weeding, watering, grooming, planting, mowing, trimming, raking, and blowing leaves and debris
- Operate power equipment such as mowers, trimmers, blowers, brush cutters and pressure washers
- Clean exterior granite, railings and furniture, and buildings as required
- Maintain and organize garden tools and equipment for safety and function
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES MIGHT INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
- Assist in managing disease and pests in landscape through scouting and spraying (organic products only)
- Assist in care of tree, shrub and groundcover borders, including pruning, grooming, fertilizing, weeding, and conducting soil tests
- Assist in cultivation and care of floral, kitchen garden, perennial garden including planting, deadheading, weeding, fertilizing, staking, tying, amending soil and harvesting
- Assist with events on properties
- Assist with carpooling employees in company vehicles
- Support estate security protocol and tasks
- Assist with any additional task that may be required to maintain the estate, ex., dog walking, car washing, minor janitorial tasks
QUALIFICATIONS-SKILLS-TRAITS
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in horticulture or related field a plus
- Two plus years’ experience as a groundskeeper, gardener, caretaker, or related profession
- Must have valid driver's license with a safe driving record, and undergo background check
- Broad knowledge of plants and plant care
- Broad knowledge of landscape tools and equipment maintenance
- Resourceful, hands-on, and goal-oriented attitude; proven organizational skills with attention to detail
- Capable of lifting up to 50lbs and perform physical labor for several hours at a time in all kinds of weather
- Flexible: willing and able to work overtime, weekends, and holidays
- Positive and willingness to assist in any aspects of the estate when called upon to do so
- Utmost confidentiality and professional discretion
- Nonsmoking and no pet allergies
Hourly pay rate dependent on experience.
Housing available for duration of position for those relocating from out of the area.
