Position: Pottery Studio Manager
General Summary
The Pottery Studio Manager is a 15 hour a week, plus twice monthly pottery Sip 'n' Spin, year-round independent contracted position that provides managerial, technical, and instructional support for smooth day-to-day functioning of the Stonington Community Center's (COMO) Pottery Studio and manages the policies of our Independent Pottery members. One significant benefit to this contractor position is full access to the studio resources for personal production.
The Stonington Community Center features the Pottery Studio Manager as an artist in residence, providing promotion and sales support for the Studio Manager's personal artwork. This position offers an opportunity to teach beginner, intermediate and advanced youth and adult ceramic classes beyond the scope of the manager position.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities
- Manages supplies maintaining appropriate stock within budget to meet program and studio needs
- Manages flow of clay through the studio in an organized and efficient manner for use by students and for sale to Independent Pottery members
- Oversees instructors to ensure the appropriate rate and timing of production, quantity, size and shape of student work
- Creates and manages electric kiln firing schedule
- Oversees all kiln firing, including loading and unloading, and kiln maintenance
- Oversees cleaning schedule, set-ups, and organization of Pottery Studio. Assists with cleaning when needed.
- Orders approved equipment when necessary
- Plans and manages all ceramic materials
- Maintains and mixes glazes
- Conducts twice monthly Sip 'n' Spin Pottery socials
- Produces wares for the Stonington Village Fair to benefit the organization
- Manages policies of Independent Pottery members
- Represents the interests of the COMO in providing a high-quality studio experience
Minimum Qualifications
B.F.A. in Ceramics or comparable formal education required. Minimum 2-4 years' work experience in the field of pottery required, including teaching adults and youth. Supervisory and management experience preferred.
Candidates will have: Strong working knowledge of ceramic arts and pottery-making techniques; experience firing, loading, and unloading an electric kiln; using the potter's wheel; knowledge of glazes and glaze mixing; and all other commonly used supplies/equipment found in a pottery studio.
Candidates should possess strong organizational, interpersonal, and computer skills.
Job Type: Contract
Pay: $1,200.00 - $1,500.00 per month
