Description
The Department of Political Science at Stony Brook University invites applications for a full-time Lecturer starting in Fall 2025. The position will serve as the Director of the M.A. in Public Policy program and will manage the program's development and strategic growth. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic leader capable of advancing the department's mission to prepare students for successful careers in government, nonprofit organizations, and the private sector. We are especially interested in candidates with a background in public policy and/or public administration, teaching experience, and some familiarity with academic administrative work. This is a twelve-month, year-round position. This is not a tenure-track position. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications up to $90,000, plus $4,000 in location pay.

Key Responsibilities:

Teaching, Advising, and Supervision
  • Proactively advise new and continuing students in the program to support student success, retention, and timely degree completion.
  • Teach four graduate courses within the program each academic year (2-2).
  • Teach the capstone preparation seminar each fall, spring, and summer terms.
  • Supervise capstone internship placements and oversee advising for capstone thesis projects.
  • Other instructional duties that may arise to support the program.

Program Administration
  • Work with campus graduate recruitment teams to plan and execute recruitment campaigns to attract high-quality and diverse student populations.
  • Perform outreach to prospective students as part of the recruitment/admissions process. Manage program application reviews and make admissions decisions.
  • Lead the development of curriculum appropriate for the program.
  • Oversee the program's course planning and scheduling process, including planning hiring requests for course instructors to meet scheduling and enrollment needs.
  • Develop and implement a program assessment plan.
  • Organize campus and external events, including events, speakers, workshops, open houses, and conferences, to support the program's visibility and impact.
  • Develop relationships with external stakeholders, such as alumni networks and private, public, and non-profit practitioners. Cultivate relationships with alumni to grow and strengthen the professional networks of current and graduating students.
  • Collaborate with department faculty, staff, and campus partners (the Graduate School, School of Professional Development, etc.) to support any program administrative initiatives.
  • Additional departmental, university, or professional service may be required.



Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • A master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in public policy, public administration, political science, or a related field.
  • Teaching experience at the graduate level in administration/planning and strong familiarity with topics such as budgeting and finance, governmental relations and policy delivery, and data applications of policy, among others.
  • At least three years of relevant work experience in a policy, planning, administration, or closely related field.
  • Strong quantitative analysis skills as evidenced by CV and writing sample.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • A doctorate or comparable degree (or foreign equivalent) in public policy, public administration, political science, law, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated record of the following, as evidenced by the applicant's CV and supporting materials:
    • Ability to successfully lead administrative initiatives and programs in a complex work environment (higher education, private, or nonprofit settings).
    • Evidence of excellence in teaching, including educating, supporting, and mentoring students and practitioners.
    • Commitment to enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion among faculty, undergraduate, and graduate students.
