Required Qualifications (as Evidenced By An Attached Resume):

Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Two (2) years of full time experience in a higher education or public health setting (student experience may be considered). Experience working with college students, high school students or young adults. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and/or Google applications.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Public Health, Higher Education, Social Work or related field. Experience leading peer education programs, including curriculum development, training, or supervising peer educators. CHES or CPH certification.

Brief Description of Duties

The Harm Reduction & Recovery Specialist will use a data-driven and evidence-informed approach to deliver comprehensive outreach and intervention programs aimed at reducing the risks associated with alcohol and other drug (AOD) use, while promoting overall wellness among students. This role encompasses population-level and individual-level outreach, peer education and supervision, collaboration with campus and community partners, and professional development.

The incumbent will bring high energy, positivity, resourcefulness, adaptability, communication and interpersonal skills, a growth mindset and student-centered philosophy to public health with diverse college students. The candidate must thrive as part of a fast-paced, continuous motion team who strives for personal best every day.

The incumbent plays a crucial role as a team member within Student Health, Wellness & Prevention Services. In this capacity, they collaborate with other team members to collectively contribute to the overall functioning and effectiveness of the services provided. This involves actively participating in team meetings, sharing insights, and engaging in collaborative decision-making processes. The incumbent's role extends to fostering a cooperative and supportive atmosphere, ensuring seamless teamwork, and collectively working towards the common goals and objectives of Student Health, Wellness & Prevention Services. Incumbent must show a commitment to inclusion, cultural humility, and the ability to work in a multicultural environment.

Population Level Outreach - Using a Data Driven And Evidence Informed Plan, Conduct Population Level Outreach Throughout Campus Aimed At Reducing Harm And Preventing Alcohol And Other Drug Use And Associated Risks. To Include But Not Limited To:

• Coordinating and conducting the Red Watch Band and Narcan bystander intervention training programs.
• Hosting engaging large scale events that help students develop an understanding of the risks associated with AOD use, how to identify misuse and abuse, how to reduce harm, effective coping skills, safer sex practices and the connection between AOD and other aspects of wellness.
• Working with CPO team members to create and implement social norming campaigns aimed at reducing student substance misuse and abuse and promoting safer sex.
• Conduct workshops, tabling and other events to educate students on AOD and safer sex topics with the goal of increasing knowledge, changing attitudes and behaviors.
  
  

Individual Level Outreach - Using a BASICS / SBIRT Based Approach, Provide Individual Outreach And Psychoeducation To Students In Need, Including But Not Limited To:

• Managing the Alcohol and Other Drug Assessment Committee - an interdisciplinary group of professionals assessing alcohol and drug infractions and ensuring proper follow up.
• Conduct mandated psychoeducational interventions with students including one-on-one and group settings.
• Conduct AOD focused screenings to identify high risk students and refer them to resources.
  
  

Peer Education & Supervision - Using a Student-centered Approach, Provide Supervision And Training To Peer Education Interns And Student Assistants Within CPO. This Includes But Not Limited To:

• Overseeing a cohort of harm reduction focused interns including organizing their outreach schedule, hosting weekly team meetings and providing training on best practices around health education and outreach in a college setting.
• Supervise student assistant(s) with a role focused on harm reduction, recovery, AOD or associated topics.
  
  

Collaboration And Partnerships - This Position Requires Continuous Collaboration With On And Off Campus Patterns To Ensure We Make a Large And Effective Impact. This Includes But Is Not Limited To:

• Extensive collaboration with the members of the CPO team to ensure departmental goals and initiatives are met including conducting non-AOD or harm reduction focused bystander training, workshops and events. Collaborations will also focus on weaving AOD/harm reduction and other topics to educate students on the connections between the different dimensions of wellness.
• Collaboration with partners within Student Health, Wellness and Prevention Services to empower students to take care of all aspects of their health and wellness.
• Working with community partners to bring experts and external resources to campus to grow the health and wellness safety net for students.
• Work with Stony Brook's University Police Department to offer training and workshops.
• This position is based on Stony Brook University's main (West) campus but will require occasional work/travel to the East (hospital) and Southampton campuses as the position serves all Stony Brook students. Travel to regional, state or national professional development opportunities and/or training may also be required at times.
  
  

Professional Development and Committee Involvement

• Participates in opportunities that promote their learning, growth, and development (i.e., classes, training, committees, webinars).
• Contributes to the Division of Student Affairs and Stony Brook University by attending and/or supporting events, activities, and programs sponsored by areas within and outside the Office of Student Life (i.e., campus-wide traditions, events, programs).
• Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
• Hours outside of the typical work schedule may be required at times.
  
  

Special Notes

This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Non Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.

In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,400 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.

Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such may be required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.
