Position Summary
Assisting Cabins, Trails, Wilderness and Developed Recreation programs at the Petersburg Ranger District on the Tongass National Forest. This position encompasses all Recreation programs on our District, from clearing trails to maintaining Developed Recreation sites, maintenance of Recreational Cabins and conducting Wilderness Character Monitoring. Positions involve traveling via boat and float plane to recreation sites, as well as hiking up to several miles a day in steep terrain and in inclement weather. Since Petersburg is in a temperate rainforest, expect to have to work in rain gear daily and camp for several days at a time in wet conditions.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
Assist Recreation staff with clearing and maintaining trails and trail corridors as well as Cabin and Developed Recreation site maintenance – involves the use of tools such as loppers, handsaws, pole saws, crosscut saws, axes, power brushers, power washers, chainsaws (if already certified), drills, skill saws, table saws, chop saws and other hand and power tools
Assist Cabins Manager and Crew Lead with Cabin and outhouse cleaning and waste removal, as well as Developed Rec site cleaning
Assist Cabins Manager and Crew Lead with cabin maintenance projects such as structural repairs, window replacement, oil stove maintenance and repairs, wood stove maintenance and maintenance of other cabin components
Marginal Duties
May be called upon to help out other resources, such as Botany, Archaeology, Timber or Wildlife if priorities arise.
Required Qualifications
Driver’s License
This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.
Preferred Qualifications
Boat experience is preferred but not mandatory (candidate may be very uncomfortable if they are prone to sea-sickness)

Living Accommodations
Placements will be provided Forest Service housing but should expect to camp in remote areas for up to 10 days at a time in a wet environment with biting insects while on certain projects. Housing in the Forest Service bunkhouse is a shared living space with up to two people per room.
Compensation
- $450/week living allowance
- $1500 one-time roundtrip travel stipend
- $1900 reimbursable duty-related expenses ($400 for personal protective equipment and $1500 for duty travel)
- Eligible for AmeriCorps Award of $1,956.35 (Requires 450 hours)
All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
