Position Summary The primary role of this position will be to support visitor services and community engagement for the Kodiak Refuge. This position will support the summer science and salmon camp program (Salmon Camp) and culture camp activities. Salmon Camp sessions will occur in rural communities within the Kodiak Archipelago for students in kindergarten through fifth grade during the summer. Salmon Camp fosters stewardship, creativity, leadership and connection to science, nature and the Kodiak Refuge. Travel by small plane is required to access remote rural communities to bring Salmon Camp to youth in those communities. This position will work collaboratively with the Alutiiq Museum Archaeological Repository, which is a core partner of Kodiak Refuge, to support regionally significant outreach opportunities. The position will attend culture camps on behalf of the Alutiiq Museum (Dig Afognak, Nuniaq Camp, Alitak Kids Camp) to lead Alutiiq arts and culture activities, as well as lead cultural activities and tours for Kodiak Island Borough School District summer school classes. This position will be responsible for ordering and managing supplies associated with supporting Salmon Camp and culture camps, and preparing materials for cultural activities and associated programs. This position will work closely as part of a dynamic team while leading tours for visitors of the Kodiak Refuge Visitor Center, Alutiiq Museum, and Ancestor's Memorial. This position will support visitor services and operations at the Kodiak Refuge Visitor Center and Alutiiq Museum on high-visitation days, such as cruise ship days. Salmon Camp utilizes culture, stories, songs, hikes, art, birding, fishing, field trips, science and more to provide engaging and diverse experiential learning to participants. Culture camps are also experiential and focused specifically on the traditions of the Alutiiq / Sugpiaq Culture.Schedule April 20, 2025 - December 13, 2025Key Duties and Responsibilities Core duties include, but not limited to :
- Organizing supplies and logistics for camps.
- Preparing for camp programs, activities, and providing environmental education and leadership at camps.
- Coordinating with camp staff and volunteers for duties and providing camp oversight if needed.
- Communicating by email, phone, mail or in person for camp planning with camp participant parents or guardians, guest speakers, community leaders and other camp partners.Marginal Duties This position will also support a number of other re-occurring environmental education programs at the Kodiak Refuge Visitor Center, such as the Families Understanding Nature program and special events such as World Migratory Bird Day and Kodiak Crab Festival, as well as outreach at the Refuge and Alutiiq Museum.Required Qualifications Kodiak Refuge Visitor Services Program employees, volunteers, and interns, will participate in a minimum of two weeks of training prior to the first Salmon Camp or culture camp session. Ability to pass a background check for working unsupervised with youth.This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.Preferred Qualifications Experience working with children ages 3-12.Experience or coursework in education.Comfortable flying in small aircraft.Comfortable being outside in inclement, wet weather.Knowledge of Alutiiq or Alaska Native history and culture.Experience with outreach events, youth camps, culture, camps, and / or community service.Strong communication.Hours 40 per weekLiving Accommodations Kodiak Refuge housing will be provided. Housing will be shared, including shared common areas like bathroom and kitchen. The City of Kodiak (Kodiak, AK) is on Kodiak Island, with a population of around 14,000 residents. Kodiak Island is only accessible by commercial flight or the Alaska Marine Highway Ferry System.Compensation $1,300 - one-time roundtrip travel allowance$525 / week - living allowance$2,000 - duty-related reimbursements (used for work duty-related expenses - discuss with supervisor)Housing provided in refuge shared housingAmeriCorps Award eligible ($5,176.50 Education Award; requires completion of 1200 hours)All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
