Position Summary

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is the leading federal provider of outdoor recreation and attracts over 335 million visitors annually to our lake and river projects in 43 states. Visitor safety at our projects is a primary concern. The purpose of providing students at each USACE facility is to perform park, visitor center, and trail operations and maintenance.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Performing routine maintenance work required, such as painting, preparing metal surfaces for painting and/or epoxying, scrubbing, sweeping, debris removal, tree cutting, litter pickup, weeding, and other tasks. Routine cleaning and sanitization of park buildings and facilities including restrooms, picnic shelters, RV dump stations, boating facilities, pump-houses, storage buildings, and park offices.

Marginal Duties

Works with Libby Dam staff to maintain and make minor repairs to irrigation systems and fencing. Uses common hand tools in repairing these items or assists by retrieving needed supplies and tools, and moving and holding items while the maintenance workers perform the needed repairs. With detailed instructions; digs ditches and trenches where grading and sloping is not required; fills and levels holes; loads, unloads and moves materials, supplies and equipment; cleans and stores hand tools. Performs minor maintenance on grounds equipment such as daily servicing requirements and blade changes.

Required Qualifications

Interns will be expected to participate in all aspects of park maintenance, including but not limited to: using a variety of common hand tools, such as hatchets, saws, tampers, rakes, and shovels in performing simple maintenance or repair jobs and/or assisting others in more complex and demanding tasks such as moving earth or sand; setting forms and mixing and pouring concrete; lubricating equipment; and similar tasks. Operating simple power tools as required. Moving materials by wheelbarrows or hand trucks. Moving and arranging furniture.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous Park or outdoor recreation experience as employee or volunteer. Basic hand tool skills. Ability to swim.

Compensation

This quote includes the following compensation for TWO, 13 week Maintenance Intern:

$500 - weekly living allowance

$25 weekly commuting allowance (Personal Vehicle REQUIRED)

$1200 - monthly housing allowance (3 months of housing)

$650* reimbursable (to/from site)

AmeriCorps Eligibility -valued at $1,956 at fulfillment of 450 service hours and completion of internship

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.

  • Per USACE policy, local candidates will not receive a to/from travel allowance but will receive a weekly commuting travel allowance instead

General Physical Requirements

  • Able to understand, adhere to, and communicate with others regarding hazards, procedures, and safety policies.

  • Able to independently manage known medical conditions with the resources available throughout the position or program.
  • Able to wear all required personal protective equipment, including internal or external, safety glasses, hard hats, gloves, N95 or other approved face mask or shield, chaps, and appropriate footwear.
  • Able to refrain from behaviors and actions that disrupt the work and safety of others.
  • Able to cooperate with others to complete daily group tasks, responsibilities, and project work under potentially difficult conditions, variable daily routines, and with limited personal time.
  • Able to self-regulate or co-regulate emotions and actions when distressed or uncomfortable, with or without the support of others.
  • Able to self-manage outdoor and environmental exposure (e.g., temperature, wind, sun, etc.) in a variety of weather conditions.
  • If using prescription medications, able to self-medicate by following the prescribed dosage, usage, and timing without supervisor assistance (except possibly at the direction of higher medical authority in emergency situations).
  • Able to independently carry a backpack weighing up to or approximately 30% of body weight for a minimum of 5 miles and a maximum of 15 miles with adequate breaks dependent on weather, terrain, and trail conditions.
  • Able to lift a backpack weighing up to or approximately 30% of body weight, with minimal assistance from others.
  • Able to correctly wear a Personal Flotation Device according to US Coast Guard specifications.
  • If intentionally or unintentionally submerged, able to exit a capsized boat, maintain a face-up position in the water, and make progress through the water to shore or a rescue boat while wearing a Personal Flotation Device.
  • Able to maintain a secure airway in the event of sudden water submersion.
  • Able to re-board or enter a boat or watercraft from the water with minimal assistance from others.
