Position Summary

Join Acadia National Park staff as they work on the cultural landscape and historic vistas of Acadia's nationally significant historic 45-mile Carriage Road system, a gift of philanthropist John D. Rockefeller. Acadia's carriage roads include bridges, gatehouses, and engineering systems designed into a rustic style that seamlessly harmonize with the surrounding landscape.

The primary role of the Individual Placements is to support Acadia's Roads Crews in maintaining the broken stone Carriage Roads, one of the best examples in the country. This involves assisting the work group in performing the simpler and more routine duties of trimming, pruning, debris removal, and assisting in light Carriage Road maintenance.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Members will be trained to use hand and power tools and will learn about and understand the maintenance needs of a heritage asset belonging to the federal government as well as the methods for the preservation of public lands for future generations.

This position will involve using hand and power tools to trim trees and cut branches from hazard and felled trees. It will also involve using rakes, shovels, and backpack blowers to clear branches, leaves, and debris from the Carriage Road system's extensive ditch and back drain system.

Marginal Duties

Assist in tracking of hazard trees and blow downs, on a tablet and GIS software.

Survey Carriage Road vistas as part of the Vista Management Plan for the Historic Carriage Road System.

Participation in training sessions and advanced skills training when offered.

Required Qualifications

A valid driver's license.

Reliable transportation (the commute from housing to Park office is several miles).

Ability to work independently and as part of a team in outdoor environments.

Be able to perform manual labor for up to 10 hours per day, occasionally lifting/moving 40 pounds or more.

Willingness to learn and use hand and power tools.

Strong communication skills.

Interest in resource management, historic preservation, recreation, and public access issues.

Must be able to always model safe and professional behavior including wearing all appropriate Personal Protective Equipment – PPE (PPE will be provided)

This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

Preferred Qualifications

Possess a strong work ethic and willingness to work outdoors in challenging conditions and willing to learn.

Strong organizational, verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Desire to engage in team-building activities and leadership development.

GIS proficiency, or an interest to learn.

Hours

40 per week

Living Accommodations

Housing is provided for this position. Quarters are in a shared house, with common living, cooking, dining, and bathroom areas. Residents may have their own bedroom, but in some cases may need to share with a same-gender roommate. Residents provide their own bedding. Specialized items and appliances should be brought if needed.

Compensation

Living allowance - $480/week

Commuting allowance - $22/week

Roundtrip travel allowance - $1,100

AmeriCorps Education Award (valued at $1,565) upon successful completion of position and minimum 300 hours of documented service.

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
