Estimating & Cost Analysis:
- Travel To Job Sites: Gather information on materials needed, labor requirements, and other factors and any potential challenges that could affect the project cost or schedule.
- Prepare Detailed Estimates: Develop comprehensive and accurate cost estimates for underground utility projects, including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor costs.
- Analyze Drawings & Specifications: Review blueprints, plans, and technical documents to determine material and labor requirements and accurately assess costs for each scope of work.
- Cost Management: Control construction costs by gathering and analyzing relevant information, identifying cost discrepancies, and projecting expenses.
- Quantity Takeoffs: Perform quantity takeoffs from construction drawings to estimate material and labor needs.
- Project Bidding: Create and submit competitive bids based on detailed project estimates. Collaborate with vendors and subcontractors to obtain quotes and negotiate pricing.
- Cost Effectiveness & Profitability: Recommend strategies to improve cost-effectiveness, enhance productivity, and increase project profitability. Evaluate a project’s financial feasibility and identify opportunities to reduce costs or expedite timelines.
- Consult Industry Experts: Discuss estimates and resolve issues, as needed.
- Vendor & Subcontractor Relationships: Establish and maintain relationships with vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors. Obtain bids for materials and services, negotiate pricing, and ensure timely delivery of supplies.
- Database Management: Develop and maintain a comprehensive database of cost keys, price masters, and vendor pricing to facilitate efficient and accurate estimating.
- Negotiations: Identify and negotiate with qualified subcontractors to obtain the best pricing and terms for each scope of work.
- Team Collaboration: Work closely with engineers, architects, owners, and contractors to align on estimates, project plans, and cost projections.
- Documentation & Reporting: Maintain clear and organized documentation of estimates, proposals, contracts, and bid comparisons. Prepare reports summarizing estimates, trends, and project cost data for internal review and client communication.
- Develop Construction Budgets: Prepare accurate construction budgets by analyzing plans, updating specifications, and identifying costs associated with labor, materials, and equipment.
- Project Plans: Assist in developing detailed project plans, outlining the construction process and key milestones for project execution.
- Maintain Professional Development: Stay up to date with industry trends, new technologies, and best practices by attending educational workshops, reviewing publications, and participating in professional networks.
- Quality Assurance: Maintain quality service by adhering to organizational standards and providing estimates that meet or exceed expectations for both cost and quality.
Skills & Competencies
Essential Skills:
- Estimating & Cost Analysis: Proven experience in estimating costs for existing underground infrastructure construction projects, with the ability to calculate labor, material, and equipment costs accurately.
- Blueprint, Plans & Specification Reading: Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical documents, and construction plans.
- Software Proficiency: Advanced proficiency with estimating software (e.g., ProEst, HCSS, Bluebeam) and Microsoft Office Suite. Familiarity with specialized tools for underground utility estimation is a plus.
- Knowledge and proficiency in Sharpesoft would be preferred but not necessary.
- Vendor & Subcontractor Coordination: Expertise in managing relationships with subcontractors and vendors, including obtaining and evaluating bids.
- Project Budgeting: Ability to prepare and manage construction budgets, ensuring that estimates align with project goals.
- Attention to Detail: Excellent ability to identify cost discrepancies and recommend cost-effective solutions.
- Reporting & Documentation: Strong written and verbal communication skills for preparing detailed reports, summaries, and presentations for clients and management.
- 3 years of estimating experience in underground utility construction (water, sewer, storm sewer).
- Trenchless Technology knowledge and estimating experience is HIGHLY preferred.
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety Certification or equivalent (preferred).
- Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) or similar industry certifications are a plus.
- A valid Driver’s License and clean driving record are required (and can be insurable).
- Ability to travel to job sites to gather project data and assess site conditions.
- Ability to occasionally lift materials up to 50 lbs. (or more).
- Comfort working in outdoor environments and construction sites.
