The Role – Control Technician I
An Automation Controls Technician I is an entry-level position focused on supporting the installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of automation systems within industrial environments. This role involves working with control systems, PLCs, sensors, and other automation components to ensure smooth operation of equipment and machinery. The technician is responsible for assisting in programming, calibrating, and testing control systems, as well as diagnosing basic issues and performing routine maintenance tasks.
Under the guidance of senior technicians or engineers, the Automation Controls Technician I, learns to apply technical knowledge to troubleshooting problems, improve system performance, and minimize downtime. Strong foundational skills in electrical systems, basic programming, and safety protocols are key in this position.
What You'll Do
- Install and test new automation control equipment including mounting enclosures, terminating wiring, and verifying operation.
- Modify existing automation systems to meet customer requirements.
- Provide customer support by phone and onsite, resolving simple to complex issues with a variety of manufacturing equipment and automation systems.
- Assemble and build electrical control panels.
- Read and interpret electrical drawings and schematics.
- Write service reports and other related documents.
- Must be able to respond to emergency service calls as directed during the day and after hours (on-call is a weekly shared/rotated responsibility).
What You Bring (Required Experience)
- Associate degree in Electro-Mechanical Technology, Automated Manufacturing, or equivalent degree/experience.
- 0-3 years’ experience programming, installing, and/or configuring the following:
- Rockwell Automation CompactLogix/ControlLogix PLCs.
- Rockwell Automation FactoryTalk ME/SE HMIs.
- Rockwell Automation PowerFlex variable frequency drives (VFDs)
- Basic understanding of electrical control systems and PLC programming.
- Experience with troubleshooting and maintaining industrial control systems (preferred but not required).
- Knowledge of electrical components, wiring, and schematics.
- Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
Bonus Points For (Preferred Experience)
Basic knowledge of industry standards, specifically NFPA 79, NEC, and UL508A.
Basic understanding of pneumatics and hydraulics.
Experience troubleshooting basic mechanical and electrical issues.
