Job Goal(s):
The primary responsibility of the Migrant Summer Home based teacher is to implement the summer migrant curriculum, assessments and provide instruction to migrant students in their homes. Due to a variety of reasons some of our students cannot attend the Summer Migrant Program on site. Our HOME staff go to the homes or Migrant Camps to provide instruction weekly to these students. English classes are also taught in the camps as needed.
The duties of the Teacher are to follow grade level migrant program curriculum or instructional standards and administer pre-instruction and post-instruction assessments as needed. Utilize student data and essential standards to accelerate learning for individual students. The teacher also communicates with the students home district to ensure students are on track to graduate with current credits.
Specific goals may include the following:
- Utilize instructional materials and standards outlined in Project SMART guidelines.
- Engage students in the instructional process and activities.
- Provide instruction to improve or extend student reading and comprehension skills.
- Provide instruction to improve or extend student math skills and use of various strategies
- Provide social-emotional learning support and strategies.
- Utilize STEM activities to extend student learning and increase student engagement.
- Provide English language development to students who have not met Michigan EL exit criteria.
- Participate in pre-service training
- Collect student data in the areas of English language development, student interests, readiness skills or reading, comprehension, math skills and strategies to deliver lessons that will engage students, accelerate learning and address learning gaps due to the migrant lifestyle.
- Utilize or access outside resources to enhance learning and build experiential background.
- Support physical activities and healthy eating and life practices.
- Help students develop a positive attitude about school and learning.
- Communicate with families as needed regarding student progress, program goals/activities or concerns.
- Notify families of school-related activities or resources available in the area.
- Share with Program Administrators referrals for special or community-based programs.
- Record and submit student daily attendance following program needs and guidance.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Valid driver's license required
- Teacher certification as required by the Michigan Department of Education. English as a Second Language or bilingual endorsement preferred.
