GIS Technician

Position Objectives:

Under minimal supervision, performs technical work to assist in the daily data management and mapping requirements of the department. Reports to the Engineer.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Interact and communicate with various groups and individuals including department staff, contractors, other government entities, and the general public.
• Gather Global Positioning System (GPS) data (i.e. lines, manholes and appurtenances) in field for the creation/updating of the GIS database.
• Convert electronic and paper-based records into GIS to create spatial inventory of maintained assets (pump stations, water and sewer mains, etc.)
• Perform internal and external field reporting of attributes for mapping.
• Prepare and/or process a variety of documentation such as digital maps, paper maps, tables, reports, graphics and similar data driven products.
• Assist various departments as needed in analyzing GIS technology and software in developing plans to implement new or modified technology to help the company meet needs.
• Attend training, seminars, workshops and meetings to maintain current knowledge of industry trends and technology.
• Work independently and be self-driven.
• Regularly gather relevant spatial information in outdoor setting.

Minimum Requirements:

• Associate’s degree in GIS, computer science, earth science, geography, cartography or related field.
• Valid South Carolina driver’s license.

Desirable Training and Experience:

• Minimum of (2) two years of work experience in managing and administering spatial databases.
• Variety of computer software experience such as ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS server, AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, etc.
• Scripting languages and data modeling experience is preferred.
