What are the responsibilities and job description for the GIS TECHNICIAN position at Dorchester County?
The purpose of the class is to perform routine-to-complex technical and clerical work in support of the operations of the Assessor's Office including the manual and computer-assisted preparation and maintenance of property maps and records; and to perform related duties as required. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed; it develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS- Performs survey reviews in conjunction with the appropriate planning agency.
- Converts existing maps and/or engineering drawings to a computerized database.
- Interprets and plots survey field notes; plans as well as creates layouts from engineering notes through computer-assisted programs.
- Assembles technical data on many different forms or in special formats for use and analysis by planners, engineers, other business professionals. County managerial staff and other agencies.
- Develops and produces presentation graphics and materials.
- Develops maps, graphics and/or engineering drawings from sketches, verbal information or from field observations, using coordinate geometry.
- Researches legal documents to obtain information on property ownership as necessary.
- Coordinates minor technical projects as assigned.
- Maintains a variety of logs, records and files related to work assignments.
- Receives and responds to department and public inquiries, concerns and complaints regarding property and/or tax issues.
- Performs general clerical work as required, including but not limited to copying and filing documents, entering and retrieving computer data, sending and receiving faxes, etc.
- May coordinate the work of lower-level staff in order to complete projects in a timely manner.
- Attends seminars and training as required to enhance or maintain job knowledge and skills.
- May update and maintain parcel information within the GIS database for use and analysis by planners, engineers and others; may prepare specialized GIS mapping products and convert existing maps and data to the correct digital format for inclusion in GIS systems.
- Receives specific training with the purpose of assisting departments in their applications of the Graphic Interface System.
· Assists in coordinating department activities and functions with those of other County divisions, departments, municipalities, developers, contractors, property owners and outside agencies as required.
- Prepares and maintains accurate logs and records related to plats, tax maps and subdivisions.
- Collects, complies and analyzes information for the preparation of drawings and maps, which may include field work.
- Receives and responds to public inquiries, concerns and complaints regarding assigned cases and general department procedures.
- Represents the County at various meetings and functions as requested.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:
Associate degree in GIS mapping, drafting, data processing or a closely related field.
Requires at least four (4) years of related work experience.
