Health Care Interpreter

Position Summary:

The Health Care Interpreter facilitates communication between patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) and the Care Clinic staff. This person is responsible for providing face-to-face and over-the-phone interpretation services between patients and providers, and at times you may work with other individuals such as family members or a patient representative. In this position, you will provide cultural information to facilitate support for a treatment plan as well as produce written and/ or audio statements in languages other than English for unique listening and /or reading audiences.

The Health Care Interpreter provides professional services under stressful conditions and acts as a Care Clinic representative to patients, volunteers, community partners, and the public. The Health Care Interpreter performs other related job duties as assigned by their supervisor.

The person in this role must demonstrate regard for the rights of all patients and provide respectful and considerate care focused on the patient’s individual needs. The person will provide a safe and confidential environment for patients, families, and personnel. This is a part-time position.

Essential Functions:

1. Promotes the philosophy and mission of Summit Community Care Clinic with patients, clinic staff, volunteers, donors, community partners, and the public.
2. Medical interpretation of primary clinic, behavioral health, SBHC, and dental.
3. Responsible for following up on patient care and maintaining positive communication experiences between providers, patients, and families.
4. Demonstrates regard for the rights of all patients based on their individual needs.
5. Provide safe and confidential communication experiences for patients, families, and personnel.
6. Ensures patient satisfaction by providing timely and accurate information when responding to inquiries.
7. Provide documentation as requested regarding interpretation activities.
8. Performs other related job duties as assigned by the Director of Clinical Operations or Chief Medical Officer.

Additional Requirements:

1. All jobs at the Care Clinic are impacted by various grants that are necessary for our sustainability. Serving in this role has direct responsibilities to those grants and is vital to the success and continuation of those grants.
2. This position may be scheduled Monday – Saturday.
3. Complete all required training as designated by HR and the position supervisor.
4. Adhere to all policies within the organization and those outlined within the SCCC Employee Handbook.
5. Comply with all SCCC Vaccine Mandates.
6. Willingness to travel and work at other SCCC locations as determined by the supervisor.
7. Comply with all applicable Credentialing and Privileging requirements timely.
8. Embrace the SCCC Mission and Vision and agree to work within the SCCC Guiding Principles and the principles set by the position supervisor.

Education/Experience:  

Must haves to be successful:

• Minimum High School Diploma/ GED
• Must be Bilingual (Spanish/English).
• Certified in medical interpretation or willingness to become certified within 6 months of hire.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Basic knowledge of digital systems (including Microsoft Office Suite) is required.
• Critical level of attention to detail, organizational skills, and time management.
• Ability to read, write, and speak the English language.
• Ability to be friendly and empathic regarding co-workers and patients.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment and be self-directed.
• Ability to reason objectively.
• Ability to document concisely, accurately, and in a timely manner.
• Ability to enlist the cooperation of others.
• Ability to work well in a high-stress environment.
• Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.

Nice to haves:

• Medical terminology is preferred.
• At least 1-year medical interpretation experience preferred.

Work Environment: 

The work environment is in a healthcare setting and can be fast-paced and involves communication with patients and medical personnel. This role is highly clerical in nature. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
