SUMMARY OF POSITION:
This role combines advanced firefighting expertise with advanced life support (ALS) medical care. The Firefighter Paramedic will respond to fire, rescue, and medical emergencies, providing critical services to protect life, property, and the community. Under the supervision of a company officer and indirect oversight of the EMS Coordinator, the Firefighter Paramedic will perform fire suppression, advanced medical care, and rescue operations while maintaining a commitment to safety, professionalism, and teamwork. This role requires a commitment to excellence in emergency medical care, teamwork, and adherence to safety and privacy standards.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Firefighting and Rescue Operations:
· Respond to fire alarms, hazardous materials incidents, and technical rescue calls.
· Perform fire suppression, ventilation, search and rescue, and salvage operations.
· Operate firefighting equipment, including hoses, pumps, ladders, and extrication tools.
· Conduct pre-incident planning and fire prevention activities, including public education and inspections.
· Maintain firefighting equipment, apparatus, and facilities to ensure operational readiness.
Advanced Emergency Medical Services:
· Provide advanced life support (ALS) care, including patient assessment, cardiac monitoring, IV therapy, and medication administration.
· Perform advanced airway management, including endotracheal intubation and cricothyrotomy.
· Stabilize and treat patients at emergency scenes, including trauma, cardiac, and medical emergencies.
· Oversee and guide EMT partners in patient care delivery.
· Safely transport patients to medical facilities while continuously monitoring their condition.
· Document patient care accurately and completely in accordance with departmental protocols.
Operational Readiness and Safety:
· Inspect and maintain medical supplies, firefighting equipment, and vehicles to ensure readiness for response.
· Adhere to safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe driving practices.
· Participate in ongoing training, drills, and certifications to maintain proficiency in firefighting and paramedic skills.
· Maintain a clean, organized, and professional work environment.
Community Engagement and Teamwork:
· Collaborate with other SFE personnel, law enforcement, and emergency response agencies during incidents.
· Engage with the community through public education, fire prevention programs, and outreach events.
· Uphold the values of Summit Fire & EMS, demonstrating integrity, respect, and professionalism at all times.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
· Proficient in advanced life support (ALS) skills, including ECG interpretation, IV insertion, and drug administration.
· Advanced patient assessment and diagnostic skills to identify and treat complex medical conditions.
· Leadership skills to oversee and guide EMTs and other team members during emergencies.
· Strong documentation skills for accurate and timely patient care reporting.
· Physical endurance to perform strenuous tasks, such as carrying heavy equipment and performing prolonged CPR.
· Ability to manage multiple priorities and make critical decisions in high-stress situations.
· Problem-solving skills to adapt to rapidly changing situations and resource limitations.
· Commitment to maintaining certifications and staying current with advancements in firefighting and emergency medical care.

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
· 2 years of firefighter or EMS experience preferred.
· Must possess a High School diploma or G.E.D., as a minimum educational requirement.
· Must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license or be eligible to obtain within 30 days.
· Firefighter 1 (must be IFSAC within 3 yrs)
· Colorado Hazmat Ops
· CPR/AED certification
· Colorado or NREMT Paramedic

· Wildland Red Card (must obtain within 6 months)
· FFT2 (must obtain within 6 months)
PHYSICAL DEMAND AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
· Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks, including lifting, carrying, and moving heavy equipment and patients.
· Capacity to work in extreme environments, including heat, smoke, and confined spaces.
· Ability to work in a high-altitude environment.
· Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.
· Willingness to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

· The SFE Board of Directors recognizes the SFE Summit Professional Firefighters Association, Local 4528 union as the exclusive bargaining representative for all full-time employees whose primary duties include response to emergency incidents. All members covered by the Union have the right to join or not to join the union.
Lateral Requirements:
To qualify as a lateral hire, at the time of application, the applicant must possess and provide proof of the following.
· A minimum of 4 years of continuous fire experience obtained in the previous 5 years.
· Experience must be obtained from a municipality, district, or other fire department that provides structural firefighting and EMS services; from an ALS EMS transport service; or a combination of both.
· Paid on-call, part-time, or volunteer firefighting experience is not acceptable experience for the 4 years outlined above.
