CHURCH PIANIST/ACCOMPANIST
POSITION SUMMARY
This position is the principal church pianist/accompanist for Summit Presbyterian Church in Stafford, VA. The pianist provides worship service music for Sunday morning worship services and traditional worship services, i.e., Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Easter, and Christmas Eve. Serves as the accompanist for the Chancel Choir, Men’s Ensemble and any other special choral groups or solos both practices and performances.
GUIDELINES
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Pastor and in cooperation with the Director of Music and the Worship Team.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS
Training and proficiency in piano performance and accompaniment is required. This includes a broad range of musical styles for worship and the ability to read four-part harmony choral music. Musical skills include a solid knowledge of the function of music in the church service and the ability to demonstrate its suitable interpretation.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the 8:30 am worship service (as needed) and 1hr prior to the 11:00 am service.
2. Be the primary accompanist for the Chancel Choir or Men’s Ensemble at the 11AM service. Arrive at least 60 minutes prior to the 11 am service for last minutes choir or men’s ensemble rehearsal.
3. Plan and prepare music for Sunday service prelude, offertory, and postlude, as needed.
4. Accompany the Chancel Choir and Men’ s Ensemble for rehearsals presently on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 until 9:00 pm.
5. Accompany soloists or special choral groups at rehearsals and services, as needed. Arrangements for rehearsals for special music will be made at the convenience of all parties involved including Summer Services music.
6. Suggest changes to music as may be appropriate to the Pastor, Director of Music and/or the Music and Worship Team.
7. When unable to play, arrange as far in advance as possible, for a substitute with the Director of Music and Music and Worship Team. The Worship and Music Team shall be notified when arrangements have been made so payment may be made for the substitute. The pianist’s salary will be adjusted for the days absent, and the amount will be allocated to pay the substitute.
8. Serve as a Member of the Worship and Music Team.
9. Play for special services during the liturgical year such as Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Easter, Thanksgiving Eve, and Christmas Eve.
10. Play for weddings and funerals held within Summit Church, if needed.
11. Coordinate with the Pastor and Director of Music when planning use of other musicians.
12. Invest sufficient hours of practice to ensure quality performance at required rehearsals and services.
