Job Description:
The successful candidate will supervise and direct assigned personnel in their activities to complete Soil Cement assignments accurately, on time, and within estimated costs.
Job Duties:
- Conduct pre-construction meetings ensuring all project members are fully informed and understand the project's specifications, requirements, and safety procedures.
- Supervise and oversee crews and subcontractors in conducting soil cement activities.
- Ensure all soil cement work complies with safety and quality standards, including regulatory requirements.
- Manage and coordinate subcontractor activities in accordance with project specifications and timelines.
- Monitor project progress and adjust schedules as required to ensure timely project completion.
- Review and approve material delivery and inventory requirements.
- Ensure project records, reports, and documentation are accurate and filed accordingly.
- Maintain a high level of client communication, including regular project updates and providing solutions to any issues that arise.
- Ensure that materials and equipment used on the job site are in good working condition, follow through with equipment repairs or replacements as required.
- Adhere to company policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
- Perform all duties within the guidelines set forth in the policies and procedures manual.
- Create an atmosphere whereby subordinates are encouraged to improve their skills and maintain a high level or morale for themselves and other employees.
- See that assigned personnel start working on time and ensure that they work the number of hours for which they are paid.
- Assist and direct drivers as well as foremen in the following areas: Using equipment in a safe and proper manner, improving job performance, controlling cost and quality of work, increasing productivity, improving communications and housekeeping of projects.
- Participate in the periodic evaluation of all assigned personnel; Discuss contributions to company; Development; possible pay adjustments.
- Supervise and direct the activities of assigned personnel in the performance of their duties, directing and instructing in proper operation/technique, use and maintenance of machinery.
- Supervise and direct activities of all subcontractors and ensure they comply with company policies, procedures, safety requirements, and quality of workmanship.
- See that all new personnel receive proper orientation to acquaint them with the company, policies, safety, and their specific job responsibilities.
- Develop a cooperative working relationship with all management, seeking their comments and suggestions.
- Cooperate with human resources and risk management departments. Requirement to be knowledgeable to all aspects of EEO and safety responsibilities. Must comply with all requirements mandated and must insist subordinates comply as well.
- Conduct a continuous evaluation of the following items: Cost and yields, material yields, plans and schedules, salaries, promotions, job assignments, equipment needs, personnel needs, on the job training program, job safety, security and crime prevention and quality control. Problems, changes or recommendations must be reported to Department Manager.
- Monitor closely all costs and yields within area of responsibility and be constantly alert to changes in the relationship of the two which might be an adverse indication.
- Schedule the purchase of all materials and supplies within area of responsibility and coordinate delivery to achieve the optimal use of material, labor and equipment.
- Ensure all work complies with all local laws, ordinance, EPA and DOT regulations concerning all activities.
- Maintain close contact and a good working relationship with the general public, engineers, inspectors and customers to facilitate job progress. Promoting positive company image is required. Develop and maintain a courteous and considerate attitude of assigned personnel toward these groups.
- Assist assigned supervisors with motor vehicle and equipment inspections, maintenance requests and repairs as needed.
- Review all required daily reports, verify their correctness, and promptly send to the transportation department manager.
- Assist operations foreman with scheduling of trucks and subcontractors.
- Maintain a daily log recording important conversations and events which could be used to future reference and ensure all supervisors maintain their daily logs.
- Maintain professional conduct at all times.
- Complete all assigned Learning Management System training initiatives.
Experience & Knowledge:
- Over one year and up to three years to become familiar with all aspects of the Grading department and assigned supervisors and drives as well as related responsibilities in the supervisor position.
- General knowledge of a specialized field; Thorough knowledge of best practices of grading stone and dirt.

Position requires integrity and discretion to safeguard confidential data such as cost, wage, personnel, or actions. Disclosure of confidential information or improper handling could result adversely internally as well as externally.

Regular contact with subordinates, other departments; Furnishing or obtaining information or report; Discussing subjects related to projects; All matters require tact to avoid friction and obtain cooperation. Position also requires contacts outside the company where improper handling could affect the company objectives or other’s perception of the company.
Complexity of Duties:
A wide variety of duties involving general knowledge of related organizational policies and procedures and their application to cases not previously covered. Duties require considerable judgment to work independently toward general results, to devise new or modify and adapt existing methods, techniques/procedures to meet new or unusual requirements, and to make related decisions guided by precedent and within the limits of established policies.
Supervision Received:
Works under general direction, policies and objectives with little functional guidance. Rarely refers specific cases to superior unless clarification or interpretation is required.
Character & Scope of Supervision:
Transportation Superintendent is responsible for the direct supervision over several units with more than 50 employees, not including subcontractors. 50% or more of the time is spent assigning, reviewing, checking work and eliminating difficulties under standardized procedures.
Errors:
Probable errors would be serious. Errors include but are not limited to: causing waste of material, damage to equipment, loss of revenue due to incorrect scheduling or coordination, or poor quality of work. All work involves considerable accuracy and accountability.
Physical Activity & Demand:
- Position requires the ability to climb onto machines, stoop, kneel, crouch, stand and walk for sustained periods of time. Position requires ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word and the ability to receive detailed information through oral communications and to make the discrimination in the equipment noises which may indicate mechanical problems.
- Frequently lifting or moving of average weighted material. Position might on occasion have to exert force greater than 60 pounds. Less than 20% if time is spent in a physically demanding role.
Mental & Visual Demand:
Continuous mental and visual attention is required to oversee job sites, personnel and equipment. Position requires constant alertness to all job activities.
Working Conditions:
Somewhat disagreeable working conditions with continuous exposure to dust, dirt, seasonal temperature variances and machine noise. Several elements are often present, and are to the extent of being objectionable.
Hazards:
Injuries, should they occur, could result in partial incapacitation due to loss of arm leg, eye or severe health hazard.
