The Ranch Herdsman plays a key role in supporting the efficient operation of the Sunlight Ranch. This position combines responsibilities in agricultural equipment operation, livestock care, landscaping, and maintenance tasks. By blending these roles, the Herdsman ensures the overall well-being of the ranch and its resources while contributing to its sustainable and regenerative farming practices.
Responsibilities:
Farm Operations
- Operate and maintain agricultural machinery, including tractors, loaders, plows, harvesters, and hay equipment for various tasks such as planting, feeding, bedding, cultivating, and harvesting.
- Perform routine equipment inspections, preventive maintenance, and minor repairs to ensure optimal functioning.
- Assist in planting, cultivating, and harvesting crops, aligning with seasonal needs.
- Manage irrigation systems and monitor water levels to support crop growth.
- Organize and store hay bales during harvest season.
- Transport crops, equipment, and materials as needed.
Ranch and Livestock Management
- Tend to livestock, ensuring their care and well-being during all seasons.
- Clean and maintain animal enclosures and other facilities.
- Build, repair, and maintain fencing to secure ranch boundaries and manage grazing areas.
Landscaping and Grounds Maintenance
- Perform landscaping activities to enhance the ranch’s appearance and functionality.
- Undertake weeding and upkeep of grounds to maintain a clean and organized environment.
Equipment and Mechanical Maintenance
- Clean, maintain, and perform routine servicing of all ranch and farm equipment.
- Collaborate with maintenance staff or perform direct repairs.

- Work to implement regenerative agriculture practices and sustainable methods.
- Monitor equipment performance and propose innovative solutions to improve efficiency.

Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional agricultural education is a plus.
- Proven experience in agricultural equipment operation and maintenance.
- Basic knowledge of livestock care and regenerative farming practices.
- Proficiency in fencing construction, repair, and general mechanical skills.
- Familiarity with landscaping, hay production, and irrigation systems.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to dynamic environments.
