Job Title: Development Officer
Location: 600 University Blvd, Harrisonburg, VA 22801 (On-site position)
Hours: Exempt, Salary Role. Full Time.
Position Overview & General Responsibilities:
The Development Officer is responsible for and/or assists with the promotion and design of annual appeals, capital campaigns, planned giving, and other fundraising programs and activities for residents, donors, church groups, and community groups; through mailings, publications, speaking engagements, and networking. Oversees and manages the database system to include information-additions, updates, and maintenance. The Development Officer ensures that gift and memorial acknowledgments are sent in an accurate and timely fashion. Assists in the identification and cultivation of potential donors for major and planned giving. Maintains knowledge of and assists with the marketing of planned giving instruments and methods.
- Communicate effectively with residents, family members, guests, co-workers, supervisors, etc.; actively listen and clearly share information demonstrating effective oral and written communication.
- Exercise good time management practices while maintaining quality of work; plan and organize work load to ensure job duties are handled efficiently and effectively and provide timely responses to those who request information.
- Manages the Blackbaud Donor System.
- Sets up mail cultivation program to include letters to current donors for annual giving appeals.
- Assists in marketing planned gifts to include bequests, charitable gift annuities, charitable unit trusts, charitable remainder annuity trusts, charitable lead trusts, gifts of insurance, life estate contracts and gifts of appreciated securities, when opportunities arise.
- Assists in identifying planned and major gift prospects from current donors utilizing the Donor database information.
- Maintains contact with donors via personal telephone calls, personal visits and personalized letters.
- Directs special campaigns and appeals such as Mother’s Day Appeal, Year-End Appeal and other annual giving opportunities in conjunction with other development personnel.
- Prepares weekly report on contacts. Informs Director of Development of weekly schedule.
- Develops and coordinates Points of Contact program in churches of the Synod of the Mid Atlantic.
- Works with the Marketing Department and Development staff to prepare donor lists and articles for the quarterly publication to constituents.
- Prepares and publishes promotional materials and newsletters for the Fellowship Fund.
- Hosts and visits churches, maintaining regular contact with members.
- Designs and implements special event programs in conjunction with facility personnel to create awareness of and support for that facility.
- Assists in the preparation of the annual departmental budget.
- Displays professionalism and commitment to Sunnyside Communities at all times.
- Adheres to all company policies and procedures.
- Attends all in-services and/or meetings as required by Sunnyside Communities.
- Meets all training requirements as required by Federal and State regulations and by Sunnyside Communities.
- Performs all duties and responsibilities in a safe and responsible manner.
- Other duties as assigned.

Requirements
Qualifications:
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in business, finance, communications or related field.
- Prior experience in Development and/or Public Relations preferred.
- Administrative and organizational skills, along with a strong attention to detail are required.
- Strong computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience with and/or the ability to learn “Raiser’s Edge for Windows” Software and “The Planned Giving Calculator” software.
- Strong communication skills; ability to read and comprehend all types of written materials, strong phone etiquette. Excellent writing and editing skills.
- Strong customer service skills; maintain a hospitality approach when engaging all individuals.
- Travel as required.
Physical & Environmental Considerations:
Work Environment: General office environment with normal lighting levels, temperature ranges, air quality, ventilation and low noise levels.
Physical Demands: Lifts, carries, pushes or otherwise manipulates equipment and office materials weighing up to 25lbs. Always use proper lifting and moving protocols and techniques.
Work Hazards: Consistent with an office environment, such as slips, trips and falls.
