The Sunnyside Shower Project (SSP) offers a safe space for houseless individuals who seek access to hygiene. Started in January 2021 by the Community Care Committee of the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association, the SSP provides showers at the Sunnyside Methodist Church three afternoons a week, along with clean clothes, laundry cards, toiletries, and other supplies. The Shower Project also helps people connect with services they need like identification, detox, and housing.
The Shower Project is hiring a part-time Project Director to build capacity for what has been an almost entirely volunteer-run organization. The position would be ideal for someone who wants to get more involved locally and help shape this vital project that means so much to so many in the community. The Project Director will work closely with the Volunteer Coordinator / Site Manager, the Leadership / Steering Committee, and also the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association (SNA) and their fiscal sponsor, Southeast Uplift.
Responsibilities :
Formalize and streamline connections that we’ve established with other homeless service organizations (Hygiene4All, NW Pilot Project, Portland Street Medicine, Street Roots, Recovery Works NW, etc), helping us better serve as a stepping stone to services like medical and mental health care and housing.
Improve communications and outreach through our website, social media, and other channels.
Hold monthly meetings with the SSP steering committee, who provide leadership around organizational development and site management.
Promote better mechanisms for oversight, guidance, and incident protocols.
Oversee purchasing of supplies and laundry cards.
Coordinate with SNA and Southeast Uplift around project finances.
Oversee employment for houseless guests who help with cleaning, laundry, and volunteer shifts.
Work with the grant-writing team to pursue new funding sources.
Coordinate with the building manager around building operations, issues, and requests for use of space.
Organize volunteer safety training, including de-escalation and Narcan training.
Oversee our annual Winter Clothing Drive.
Qualifications :
The ideal candidate will have experience in nonprofit / mutual aid work, be an excellent and clear communicator, and have a commitment and passion to serving the houseless community.
