The Superior Court of Contra Costa County is conducting an open recruitment to fill an Assistant/Senior Assistant Family Law Facilitator position. Individuals selected must be available to be assigned to any court location. The Assistant/Senior Assistant Family Law Facilitator will be responsible for daily assistance and services under the direction of the Self-Help Managing Attorney. An eligibility list will be established as a result of this recruitment and may be used to fill other vacancies in the future. Only incumbents who meet the minimum qualifications by the final filing date may apply.
The individual appointed to this position will perform a wide variety of duties for self-represented litigants. Duties include, but not limited to: 1.) assisting self-represented litigants in a variety of settings; 2.) providing educational materials to parents regarding the process of establishing parentage and establishing, modifying and enforcing child and spousal support in the courts; 3.) distributing necessary court forms and voluntary declarations of paternity; 4.) providing assistance in completing forms; 5.) preparing support schedules based upon statutory guidelines; 6.) providing referrals to the local child support agencies, Family Court Services and other community agencies and resources that provide services for parents and children; 7.) facilitating informal agreements between self-represented parties on issues of child and spousal support and the maintenance of health insurance; 8.) assisting with drafting stipulations agreed to by all parties; 9.) preparing orders after hearing and judgments; and 10.) reviewing paperwork, examining documents and performing other duties at the direction of the Family Law Facilitator.
Individuals appointed to these positions must be able to: 1.) work well with others as well as work independently; 2.) have the ability to handle multiple demands and deadlines; 3.) have a good understanding of court procedures; 4.) be attentive to detail and maintain accurate and neat records; 5.) maintain a positive and professional attitude; and 6.) possess good interpersonal and oral communication skills. Regular and punctual attendance is essential.
The IDEAL CANDIDATE should have the following knowledge and abilities:
Knowledge of:
Relevant federal and state family laws and regulations;
Trial and hearing procedures, and rules of evidence;
State and Local rules of court relevant to family law matters; and
Family law computer programs.
Ability to:
- Read and understand complex legal information, procedures and forms;
- Effectively explain legal concepts, issues and procedures to self-represented litigants who may have little or no knowledge of the law;
- Analyze a variety of information, relate it to the law and reach decisions;
- Effectively use relevant computer applications and word processing software;
- Interpret and apply statistical information related to the program;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships;
- Set priorities and complete projects in a timely manner;
- Communicate effectively both orally and in written form;
- Remain patient, calm and professional while working with individuals who are in highly stressful situations.
Minimum Qualifications:
Assistant Family Law Facilitator:
- Possession of a law degree from an accredited law school;
- Active membership in the State Bar of California.
Senior Assistant Family Law Facilitator:
- Possession of a law degree from an accredited law school;
- Active membership in the State Bar of California;
- Three (3) years experience as a practicing attorney in family law, or as a Family Law Facilitator/Assistant Family Law Facilitator in a trial court.
Highly Desirable Qualifications:
- Law courses taken and successfully completed in the areas of family law and California community property law;
- Bilingual – Ability to speak fluent Spanish.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Conditions of Employment
Successful completion of fingerprint and a criminal record background check is required prior to appointment and is a condition of employment.
Because the Court operates in multiple branches, the employee may be required to travel to other court locations, and possession of a valid California driver's license is therefore required. All employees of the court who operate a vehicle on court business must certify they possess a valid California Driver’s License and required levels of automobile insurance.
Convictions
Felony and misdemeanor convictions MAY BE disqualifying for employment with the court. The court will assess the nature and gravity of the offense, the time that has elapsed since the offense was committed, and the nature of the job duties to be performed.
Employment Eligibility:
In accordance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, all persons hired after November 6, 1986, are required to present to the Court, at the time of appointment, original documents which show satisfactory proof of: 1.) identity and 2.) U.S. Citizenship or a legal authorization to work in the United States.
