ABOUT THE COURT 
Los Angeles Superior Court is the largest unified trial court in the United States. Its 580 judges and commissioners work in one of the 36 facilities within the Court's 12 judicial districts and are supported by more than 4,800 full-time Court employees. The Court has an annual budget of more than $1 billion. Located in Southern California, Los Angeles County is geographically one of the nation's largest counties, covering 4,752 square miles and, with over 10,400,000 residents, is also one of its most populous counties.

ABOUT THE POSITION
The Managing Self-Help Attorney is responsible for planning, managing and directing all non-judicial operations and administrative functions of the Court's self-help programs which include the Family Law Facilitator’s Offices. The incumbent is responsible for the planning and implementation of new self-help programs offered by the Court including developing operational policies and procedures. For a detailed job description, please click here

This is an at-will managerial position. The Trial Court Employment Protection and Governance Act (SB 2140) authorizes the Court to exclude managerial employees from the employment protection provisions of the Act subject to meet and confer. 

TELEWORK OPPORTUNITIES
This position is eligible for some telework following an initial training period.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
To qualify, you must meet ALL the following requirements at the time of application:


•Graduation with a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school
•Member of the California State Bar in good standing
•Five (5) years of experience as a self-help or family law attorney, including one (1) year of which must have been managing and/or supervising attorneys
•Completion of 40 hours of training in mediation techniques and approaches, including training in domestic violence

Note: Credit for experience is given based on a 40-hour workweek. Part-time experience is credited on a part-time ratio, i.e., working 20 hours per week for two months equals one month of experience. No additional credit is given for overtime.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements
A valid California Class C driver's license or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles Managing Self-Help Attorneys may only practice law within the scope of their duties as employees of the Court, and are prohibited by Court policy from any outside practice of law during the course of their employment. This prohibition includes giving legal advice, receiving fees, and/or appearing in any court on behalf of another person.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with self-help grants
  • Experience working with Judicial Council of California programs

EXAMINATION INFORMATION
PART I: Qualifying evaluation of education, training, and experience based on submitted application materials and supplemental questionnaire. 

PART II: Applicants who best meet job-related qualifications will be invited to participate in the examination process that may consist of any written, performance, or oral appraisal to evaluate further job-related experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
