Los Angeles Superior Court is the largest unified trial court in the United States. Its 580 judges and commissioners work in one of the 36 facilities within the Court's 12 judicial districts and are supported by more than 4,800 full-time Court employees. ABOUT THE PROGRAMS
The Court's volunteer and internship programs offer participants valuable opportunities for practical work experience and skill development while familiarizing them with court procedures and various operations, functions, and activities. The programs are intended to provide participants with an enhanced understanding of and appreciation for the judicial system.
Please review the descriptions below carefully to ensure you select the appropriate program in your application.
(1) Court Administration & Courthouse Operations
Offers practical experience in court administration, managing the operational aspects of the judicial system, and the essential components needed for a courthouse to function efficiently and deliver services. This may also include administrative support functions such as human resources, finance, community relations, and other functions.
Placement Areas: Participants may be placed in any courthouse in LA County. Indicate your preferred area in your application. Remote/hybrid opportunities may also be available.

- Individuals seeking to gain general work experience or experience in a particular administrative area while learning about the administration of justice and career paths within the court system.
- Individuals referred by employment support programs like CalWorks, GROW, SER, Pathpoint, etc...
- Must be at least 16 years old.
(2) Judicial & Courtroom Operations
Participants work closely with judicial officers and courtroom staff and have an opportunity to observe courtroom proceedings in criminal, civil, family, dependency, and mental health. They are exposed to courtroom operations, chambers’ procedures, legal terminology, case law, code sections, and other written material.

- Individuals interested in pursuing a legal career or those seeking to gain general work experience while learning about the administration of justice and career paths within the court system.
- Must be at least 16 years old.

(3) Juvenile Dependency Mediation
Offers hands-on mediation experience assisting Probate clients in completing guardianship petitions and co-mediating dependency court cases.
Placement Areas: Edmund D. Edelman Children's Courthouse, Monterey Park.

(4) Paralegal
Provide quality paralegal work experience including assisting with the preparation of legal documents for cases involving child support, spousal support, and health insurance issues. Participants receive experience preparing legal documents, access to networking opportunities, and an overview of Court processes and procedures.
Placement Areas: Family Law (Self-Help Centers, Domestic Violence Clinic, Guardianship Clinic, Toll Family Law Counseling Center with LAFLA), Civil Law
Who Should Apply:
- Students currently enrolled in paralegal schools, colleges and universities throughout LA County.
- Individuals who have completed a Paralegal certificate program in paralegal schools, colleges, or universities.
- Must be at least 16 years old
Note: most programs allow participation as a volunteer or intern.
Volunteers donate their services without pay from the Court and without compensation or credit from a third party (may receive aid or benefits as part of a government program).
Interns receive accreditation or course credit from their school or certification program. (it is applicant's responsibility to determine if the Court's program meets the requirements of their specific course/program to receive credit).
WHAT TO EXPECT NEXT
If you qualify for the program for which you applied, you will be placed on an eligibility list for up to 6 months and considered for available opportunities.
