Under general supervision performs responsible accounting support and administrative work in classifying and processing accounting transactions, maintaining and reconciling assigned accounts and compiling, reviewing and verifying data and information to prepare assigned financial and accounting reports.Distinguishing Characteristics Accounting Technicians are responsible for performing highly responsible processing, reconciliation, verification, administration and reporting duties in one or more of the following specialized accounting support areas: cash receipts, revenue distribution, processing of claims, trust funds, non-sufficient fund checks and bail/bond and refund processing. Incumbents in this class are expected to perform these functions in an accurate, timely manner in accordance with legal requirements and sound financial management principles and practices.Accounting Technician I is the journey level class in the series. Working under general supervision, incumbents perform routine to moderately difficult tasks associated with the receipt and processing of accounting and financial data. Incumbents typically perform limited interpretation of standard regulations and procedures and research and resolve routine errors/problems without assistance, referring difficult problems to the supervisor.Accounting Technician II is a more advanced class in the series. Incumbents are typically required to possess and regularly apply broader knowledge and perform a wide variety of difficult and responsible financial/accounting duties which require extensive interpretation and application of policies, procedures and regulations. Incumbents are expected to have a thorough understanding of the interrelationships of internal and external record keeping systems.Accounting Technician series is distinguished from the Accountant series in that employees in the Accountant series perform more difficult functions, including revenue distribution and reporting responsibilities that require more advanced technical accounting skills and knowledge and command of a wider array of laws, statutes and codes and Court policies and procedures.Accounting Technician series is also distinguished from the Accountant class series in that incumbents in the latter classes are expected to perform a full range of professional accounting responsibilities.Educational/Bilingual IncentiveIncumbents may be eligible to receive an educational incentive of either 2.5%, for an associate's degree, 3.5%, for a bachelor's degree, or 5% for a master's degree that is not required to work in the classification. Incumbents may also be eligible for bilingual incentive pay depending upon operational needs and certification skills.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Maintains ledgers, journals, logs, files and other accounting records; extracts, posts, adjusts and reconciles entries from supporting documents and records; classifies and codes accounting documents for proper distribution of expenditures into accounts, responsibility centers, projects or other categories.Performs a variety of mathematical calculations; computes charges, interest, penalties, refunds and other financial data, verifies totals and extensions; calculates totals and balances accounting documents to ledgers, control totals and other documents.Monitors revenues, expenditures and appropriations to ensure compliance with established requirements or for other control purposes; verifies accurate distribution of revenue and costs.Reviews and compares accounting documents for consistency, accuracy and adherence to standard procedural requirements; verifies totals and availability of funds before processing; contacts others to resolve discrepancies and/or obtain clarifying data.Interprets regulations, procedures and contractual or other legal requirements for the purpose of determining the appropriate procedure/regulation or formula to apply; resolves routine problems without assistance; performs research to resolve errors or identify payments; refers the more difficult problems to the higher level.Prepares a variety of accounting documents including statements, delinquency notices, purchase orders, requisitions and requests for checks; prepares periodic and special statistical and financial reports; assembles, sorts and tabulates data for inclusion in reports.Interfaces with the public, vendors and/or other agencies/departments to provide and/or exchange information or explain procedures; may advise others on the accounting records maintained.Maintains fixed asset records, including recording, monitoring, designating items appropriate for fixed asset status or surplus and monitoring status/location of equipment; maintains equipment service records including monitoring of service contracts.Balances collections and disbursements; prepares and balances bank deposits.Acts as control for petty cash or revolving funds; reconciles petty cash or revolving fund accounts; issues funds, or other items with monetary value; receives fees and issues receipts.May key a variety of accounting documents, memos, letters, statistical reports or other reports incidental to the performance of the general accounting duties.May have responsibility for inventory, ordering, receipt and distribution of office supplies.Operates adding machines, calculators and other office equipment. May operate automated accounting systems to perform general accounting duties including entering and accessing data, changing data and basic manipulation of data; may review and correct computer error reports.Reviews and processes travel claims for accuracy and adherence to standard procedural requirements; and makes travel arrangements for court staff.Performs other duties as assigned.

The supplemental question portion of the application is an integral part of the recruitment process and will be used to screen more qualified applicants.WRITTEN EXAMINATION: A job-related online written examination will be administered to test qualifying candidates' knowledge of basic accounting principles, English, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, reading comprehension, filing, proof reading. Candidates must earn a passing score of seventy percent (70%) or higher to qualify for continuation in the recruitment process.
