ANNUAL SALARY: 

$76,980.80 - $95,617.60

ABOUT THE POSITION
Under general supervision, the Associate Building Maintenance Engineer performs the installation, maintenance and repair of various air conditioning, heating, ventilation, and refrigeration equipment and systems, and a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work in the maintenance of buildings and associated equipment; performs maintenance, repairs and calibration on heating and air conditioning control devices. Performs other electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and carpentry related repairs and maintenance; and performs related work within area of assignment.  The incumbent may be required to cross train at other courthouses (as needed), and the incumbent may be required to work on weekends depending on business needs.

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following: 

  • Inspects and examines heating/refrigeration and air-conditioning, air compressors, and all auxiliary equipment to locate defects in operations, disassembles unit and restore to operating condition; repairs or replaces condensers, compressors, pumps, valves, motors, bearings, belts and other parts.
  • Recycles and charges refrigerants as required; inspects and tests refrigeration systems, safety devices, and control for efficiency of operation and compliance with safety practice and regulations.
  • Troubleshoots and takes corrective action for major malfunction and breakdowns of heating/refrigeration and air-conditioning systems pumps, air handlers, fans ducts, dampers and grills. 
  • Installs, repairs and maintains major heating/refrigeration and air-conditioning units, coils, fans, subsystems and components parts; performs welding and soldering as needed. 
  • Repairs and adjusts pneumatic controls, lines and fittings, changes filters and belts, lubricate and oil equipment according to manufactures specification and industry standards; performs weekly, monthly, and annual preventive maintenance on all related equipment including daily inspection repair, change-out and system upgrades.

Associate Building Maintenance Engineer 
EDUCATION:
High school diploma, or GED equivalent.

EXPERIENCE:
Two (2) years of full-time (or equivalent) experience independently installing, maintaining, repairing, and rebuilding non-residential refrigeration and air conditioning systems and related equipment.


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS (LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, TESTING, etc.):
• Must pass a thorough background check.
• Possession of a Universal Technician certification as required by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in accordance with Section 608 of the Clean Air Act for dealing with refrigerants from an EPA approved program. A copy of your certification must be included with your application. 
• Class III Asbestos training required within one (1) year of hire. Must renew or recertify annually at the cost of the court.
• Fire Pump Test Certificate; must initiate process to obtain certificate within six (6) months of hire.  Must renew or recertify annually at the cost of the court.  
• Possession of a valid California Drivers' License, Class C to travel to and from justice centers and other locations. 
Successful completion of a pre-employment physical testing.

KNOWLEDGE OF
  • Principles and practices of safely installing, maintaining, repairing, and calibrating air conditioning, refrigeration, heating and ventilating systems.
  • Principles of water treatment related to heating and cooling systems. 
  • Tools and equipment used in heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration maintenance and repair work. 
  • Pertinent California Administrative Code (Occupational Safety and Health Administration/OSHA). 
  • California codes for Industrial Safety, Southern California Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) Rule 1415. 
  • Federal Environmental Protection Act Rule 608 in order to comply with any oil or refrigerant handling. 

ABILITY TO
  • Repair, operate, service or install air conditioning, heating, ventilation, refrigeration and controls involving centrifugal and absorption refrigeration units with electronic-pneumatic control systems, that are driven by electric motors or condensing turbines as prime movers.
  • Diagnose malfunctions of mechanical systems and controls and restore to specified operating standards. 
  • Perform a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and repair work in the electrical, mechanical, carpentry and plumbing areas. 
  • Make safe, skillful repairs on small building maintenance jobs. 
  • Learn and understand state and local laws, ordinances and regulations pertaining to air conditioning, refrigeration, heating and ventilating equipment. 
  • Effectively supervise contractor personnel assigned to assist on various projects including providing some on the job training, giving clear directions, and establishing professional working relationships.

SELECTION PROCESS

Note: Though candidates may live outside of the State of California while participating in a recruitment process, individuals must reside within the State to be eligible for Court employment. 

STEP 3: Those candidates who are successful in the review/assessment may be placed in the eligible list. Placement on the eligible list is not a guarantee of interview or employment
