Description of essential job functions:
Operates extruders to apply an insulating compound to cable cores in accordance with engineering specification and standard production procedures while maintaining finished product dimensions between tolerances ranges specified. Operator must prepare extruder for products to be manufactured by setting heat controls, selecting proper extrusion tools according to set up sheets and loading proper compound supply. Operator must also be able to operate all necessary support equipment; for example- pre-heaters, corrugators, roll formers, cone formers, pressure fills and printers. Must be able to monitor wire or cable and perform quality check during run. Must be able to fill out production reports; legibly and correctly.

- Equipment used:
- Computer, PLC, Extruders, extrusion tools in various sizes and configurations, payoffs, preheating equipment, cleaning troughs, counter, micro-limit gauges, various types of take-ups, direct reading or monitoring equipment, micro-meters, pin gauges, hand tools such as pliers, etc. Reels (wood and metal), splicing equipment, wire and galvanized steel straighteners. Butt welder and sonic welder, payoffs, gas pre-heater, hoists, box scope, box feeders, forklifts, cross and short detectors. Tilt lift, PVC bulk handling system, adhesive applicator, tape accumulators, accumulator towers, various inline equipment, extruder component and controls for measuring various extrusion conditions. Extrusion tools in various sizes and configurations, equipment for vacuum set-ups, marking equipment, flooding equipment, & cable cutters.
- Material Used:
- Jacket insulation compounds, ID and year marker, marking tape, various liquid marking inks, identification tags, reports for recording characteristics of operations, screen packs, razor blades, boxes, wooden pallets, labels, adhesive solutions, and cores (standard or wrapped). Flooding compounds, oils, RIP cords, wooden and metal reels in various sizes, steel support wire, tapes, cleaning solvents, nails and binders.
In order to perform this job satisfactorily, applicant must be able to:
- Failure to comply with standard operating procedures or quality control specifications will result in excessive scrap or low quality product. Damage to equipment will usually be to extrusion tools and this will be nominal. Material loss due to carelessness could be substantial if not loaded correctly.

- Six month minimum to one year
- Reading, writing, and simple math. A high school diploma or equivalent is required
- Must be familiar with extruders to the extent that adjustments can be made to maintain product specifications taking into account the large number of variables affecting quality. Make cause and effect type adjustments. Knowledge of material includes five or six compounds, extrusion characteristics, packaging differences, part numbers, talc systems and labels.
- Methods to setup are complex. Procedures are quite extensive in number but are for the most part well defined
- Supervision is available but when decision must be made during runtime, the operator may be in a position to take independent action within the limits of company policy. Uses judgment in monitoring quality during run
- Initiative in making adjustments in quality during the process and troubleshooting is common. Precedent may or may not be established
Physical requirements of this job:
- Undesirable conditions include: moderate noise level (hearing protection furnished), heat from extruders, minor burns, fumes from adhesive, and cuts and punctures. Must stand on a concrete floor. Hazards exist from induction heater, adhesive pot, adhesive applicator, take-ups and hoist.
- Exceptional color perception. Good physical condition
- Strength: exert force to extreme limits in moving large reels to be loaded or unloaded
- Endurance: Work is intermittently demanding with opportunities for rest
