Position Overview
The AVP of Clinical Laboratories is responsible for overseeing all aspects of laboratory services, including Anatomic Pathology, Clinical Laboratory, Outreach, Quality Management, Process Improvement, Standardization, Regulatory Compliance, Customer Service, and Courier programs. This role provides strategic direction and manages key laboratory and courier business relationships. The AVP works closely with executives and laboratory directors to drive the success of laboratory services.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead system-level laboratory quality programs, technical and pre-analytic standardization, and process improvement initiatives.
- Identify and prioritize opportunities for service improvement, productivity enhancements, cost reduction, waste elimination, quality improvements, and regulatory compliance.
- Collaborate with the executive management team on strategic planning and positioning to stay ahead of industry trends and needs.
- Oversee the planning and budgeting of laboratory operations, including operating and capital budgets.
- Manage third-party contracts related to laboratory services and regularly evaluate contract performance for quality and efficiency.
- Oversee the management of anatomic pathology services, including contracted medical director and physician agreements.
- Lead recruitment, selection, supervision, coaching, and development of laboratory staff at various levels, including directors, managers, and supervisors.
- Ensure alignment of resources with patient and procedure volume trends in accordance with organizational strategies.
- Maintain open communication with physicians and professional staff to address needs and ensure satisfaction with laboratory services.
- Support staff development through training, educational programs, and ongoing professional growth opportunities.
- Ensure compliance with licensing and accrediting agencies and laboratory standards (e.g., CLIA, CAP, TJC).
- Maintain adherence to departmental policies and procedures, including quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
- Build and maintain professional networks locally, regionally, and nationally.
- Perform additional responsibilities as needed.
- Bachelor's degree in chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science.
- Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
- Proven ability to lead large laboratory teams within a health system or similar setting.
- Excellent time/project management skills and the ability to coordinate cross-functional efforts.
- Familiarity with emerging trends and technologies in laboratory medicine, as well as changes in healthcare policies.
- At least 7 years of administrative laboratory leadership experience in an integrated health system or similar environment.
- Certification from the relevant professional bodies (e.g., ASCP).
- Master's degree in Business, Healthcare Administration, or related field.
- In-depth knowledge of clinical laboratory operations across pre-analytic, analytical, and post-analytic processes.
- Strong understanding of laboratory regulations and standards (e.g., CLIA, CAP, OSHA, HIPAA) and ensuring system-wide compliance.
- 10 years of experience in administrative laboratory leadership.
- Additional certifications such as Medical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Technologist, Cytotechnologist, or Histotechnologist.
- ASCP Certification
- 7 years of administrative laboratory leadership experience.
