The Safety Manager will be responsible for leading the Occupational Health and Safety programs at the mill to ensure compliance with local, state, federal, and corporate safety requirements. This individual will oversee health services, fire protection, emergency response activities, and drive safety initiatives across the facility. The role requires evaluating mill performance against key safety indicators and ensuring the execution of safety programs that align with company expectations.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee and manage the Health & Safety programs for the mill, ensuring compliance with all safety regulations.
- Lead health services, fire protection, and emergency response activities.
- Develop, implement, and maintain safety systems, procedures, and training to ensure an injury-free work environment.
- Prioritize actions to minimize Significant Injury & Fatality (SIF) potential events, ensuring the team focuses on these as top priorities.
- Manage multiple Hourly Safety Coordinators, promoting a safety culture with a Human Organizational Performance (HOP) mentality.
- Foster a culture of completing Drift Assessments across the mill to proactively identify and improve task execution.
- Oversee investigations of near misses and injuries, ensuring thorough root cause analysis using the 5-Why methodology.
- Identify safety trends and emerging issues, developing strategies to address them and improve performance.
- Implement preventative health and safety programs to reduce risks in the workplace.
- Coordinate Industrial Hygiene Monitoring for noise and chemical exposure.
- Integrate continuous improvements in health and safety systems and drive employee engagement to achieve desired results.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA logs and reporting requirements.
- Serve as the Process Safety Management Coordinator.
- Leverage expertise in mill operations to drive effective safety practices.
- Collaborate with corporate Health & Safety staff to implement Global Performance Standards.
- Lead and implement continuous improvement activities to reduce and manage safety risks.
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, or a technical discipline with relevant experience.
- Minimum of 5 years of Occupational Health and Safety experience in the pulp/paper industry.
- At least 2 years of experience in a facility of a similar scale.
- Expertise in Process Safety Management (PSM) is a plus.
- CSP (Certified Safety Professional) and/or CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist) certifications are preferred.
