Job Summary:
The Director of Precision Machining (PM) is responsible for overseeing an operations team of roughly 50 people over 3 shifts that generates roughly $10-20M / year in sales of opto-mechanical components and assemblies for the Defense, Aerospace, Medical, and Consumer markets. This role includes oversight of direct labor, engineering, and planning resources working in adherence to ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 Quality standards. This is a critical role on the Site Leadership Team reporting to the Site Manager.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the PM department, ensuring alignment to company Mission-Vision-Values and that our processes fully adhere to our ISO Quality Manuals.
- Establish and enforce strict safety protocols in compliance with OSHA and company standards to maintain a safe working environment.
- Lead, mentor, and manage all personnel including operators, machinists, technicians, engineers, and support staff to ensure a team-based culture of performance and accountability.
- Drive process improvement programs to increase throughput while reducing inventory and operating costs in collaboration with Engineering, Product Management, Quality, and Logistic team members.
- Regularly achieve business goals in the areas of Quality RMAs, On-Time Delivery, Operational Efficiency, and adherence to forecast.
- Monitor machine performance and troubleshooting, ensuring that any issues are resolved promptly to avoid delays in production.
- Achieve Yearly business goals in the areas of Growth, Performance, Capabilities as they fit with the Strategic Plan.
- Owner of the Capacity Maps for all Value Streams in the PM area. Using 3-6-12 month forecasts, balances operating costs versus revenue projections and drives new capital procurements as needed.
- Work with production planners to drastically improve all logistics tools and ERP systems to allow for accurate tracking of customer performance, operating costs, and inventory.
- Collaborate with site leadership on critical programs related to Organization and Talent Development, Strategic Planning, Budgeting, and Goal Setting.
- Review and manage departmental budgets, controlling costs while optimizing resources and improving efficiency.
- Assist in cost estimation and quoting for machining projects, providing input on labor, machine time, and material costs.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands to operate machinery and tools.
- The employee may be required to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- The work environment includes exposure to noise from machinery and a variety of physical demands, including the use of precision instruments.
- Protective equipment such as safety goggles, hearing protection, and steel-toed boots must be worn while on the shop floor.
- The noise level in the work environment may range from moderate to loud.
Education, Skills, and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Technology, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
- At least 5 years of management experience in a high-tech manufacturing field, with a minimum of 2 years managing teams of > 20 people.
- Ability to establish and motivate teams to solve complex machining issues and implement solutions effectively.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills to manage and motivate staff through use of Mission-Vision-Values.
- Knowledge of and hands-on experience with CNC machining, turning, milling, and other precision machining methods is very beneficial.
- Strong knowledge of the principles of Lean Manufacturing, 8020 Methodologies, and Structured Problem Solving are preferred.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) and other relevant software for managing production and performance metrics.
