LOCATION: Office of Information and Technology JOB DESCRIPTION:
The work involves responsibility for all personal computers and communication lines including installation and testing of new equipment, diagnosis and repair problems with computer boards, hard disks, floppy drives, monitors and printers. Unlike a Computer Equipment Maintenance Specialist, an employee in this class performs technical repairs and upgrades to the computer system hardware; investigates problems with the aid of diagnostic software disks, logic probes, voltmeters and oscilloscopes. An employee in this class is a member of an automation team where the emphasis is on hardware problems and repair. Supervision is received from an administrative supervisor but an employee in this class will function independently, with little supervision over the technological aspects of his/her job. Although an employee in this class instructs others on the proper use of the computer equipment, supervision is not a function of this position. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Installs, checks and tests new equipment for reliability.
- Diagnoses problems with the equipment and ascertains the best and most cost- effective method(s) for solving them.
- Troubleshoots and repairs problems with computer boards, hard disks, floppy drives, monitors and peripherals.
- Troubleshoots the phone system when it malfunctions.
- Recommends state-of-the art methodology and necessary equipment to better serve the public and accomplish the departments goals.
- Investigates problems with the use of diagnostic software, voltmeters, logic probes and Oscilloscope.
- Solves problems associated with software compatibility.
- Interacts with manufacturer's engineering department regarding difficult equipment repair problems.
- Instructs personnel on proper use of equipment.
- Assists in preparation of specifications for the purchase of new electronic equipment.
- Assists Communication Network Analyst in connecting computer hardware to campus network and outside services.
- Keeps current with changing computer technology.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
- Good knowledge of principles and practices of diagnosis, maintenance and repair of personal computers, Hard disks, floppy drive and electronic components.
- Good knowledge in the operation of personal computers and their operating systems.
- Good knowledge of communications protocol.
- Skill in the use of electrical and electronic testing equipment and tools.
- Ability to work with others in a "team" environment; strong interpersonal skills.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an associate's degree in electrical technology or a closely related field and one (1) year of work experience, or its part time equivalent in the repair and maintenance of microcomputer systems; or,
B. Completion of a course in technical computer repair from a recognized technical business or training school and two (2) years of work experience, or its part time equivalent, in the repair and maintenance of microcomputer systems; or,
C. Three (3) years of work experience or its part time equivalent, in the repair and maintenance of microcomputer systems; or,
D. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B), and (C)
WORKING HOURS: This position will work 40 hours per week, 12 months per year. This position is full-time. SALARY/COMPENSATION: The current hourly rate for this position is $32.19 per hour per the Unit 6 contractual agreement. QUALIFICATIONS:
- To be considered, all candidates must be on the current Onondaga County Civil Service eligibility list for this title be currently working in this title.
